The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

convert from domain to workgroup

I bought a computer from the company where I was on their domain. Now I want to use the computer as a workgroup computer. But I have lots of programs, desktops, my documents, etc that I need to keep using. Is ther a way to switch my computer from a domain login to a workgroup login and keep all of my personal settings?

You can remove the computer from the domain by loging on as the Local Administrator, going to My Computer, right clicking and selecting "Properties"
in the Computer Name tab, select Network ID and then select "This computer is for home use...." and put the computer into a workgroup

You can also use the My Computer, Advanced, User Profiles, Settings options to copy your existing profile to a new account (dont forget to select - Premitted to use and select Everyone) - alternatively you can use the Files and Settings Transfer wizard. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/crawford_november12.mspx

Have you left the domain yet?

You might find if you've left the domain and taken your computer home, you don't have access to logging onto the domain account anymore.

In either case, i've found doing a manual transfer to be more reliable then using the inbuilt profile copy (the one where you go into profiles and right click copy) and personally i haven found USMT (user state migration tool) to miss stuff or just totally screw up the new profile.

To manually copy the profile over here are the steps.

1. know the name of the folder of the original domain profile.
2. log onto your computer locally as your new account (you don't have to leave the domain to do this)
3. know the name of the folder for your new local account.
4. reboot the computer (important as files could be left open from either account and not be able to be copied or copied over)
5. log on as a different user from the above with local admin rights.
6. go into the domain folder profile (it would be under C:\Documents and Settings\domainusername)
7. highlight the contents of this folder and and copy all (make sure everything is unhidden)
8. go into the folder of the new local account and paste everything on top
(Note, this will destroy everything in the current local account, so best to use a new local account to do this) (the reason why we paste the contents of the folder and not the folder itself or just rename the folder is because the local folder you are in now as a special SID associated with the local account)
9. since your logged in as the local admin now, make sure you check to make sure your new local account is a local admin as well
10. reboot the computer and log in as the local user, make sure everything looks correct, the best way to make sure everthing worked is make sure your desktop background is correct, go into my documents and make sure you can see all the documents you had in there, if you cannot, then it sounds like a rights issue which is easily fixed.
11. If everything is not working now, it's a rights issue, open up windows explorer, go to your folder (the one under documents and settings) right click on your folder, go to the permissions, take ownership of the entire folder and child contents, then add your admin rights to the folder and all child contents.
Reboot again and you should have your entire domain profile copied over to your local profile, the thing i like about this method is it also leaves your original domain profile intact just in case of any issues (as long as you have the hard disk space.

good luck!

One thing I need to be sure of before I try any of the above ... I have email and encrypted directories that I need to continue to access. Will any of the above cause the system to refuse access (especialy email - I'm using Outlook 2003).

Are you talking about XP file encryption?
Yes you will want to get rid of this encryption as your new account won't be able to access EFS folders since it won't be a domain account.

IF your just talking about PSTs being encrypted then it shouldnt be an issue.

As i said, reboot and copy the contents of the AD account folder into the new account, and reboot and log into the new account (don't leave the domain) this way you can check to see if the new account works, and if it doesn't everything in the old account should still be in there.

What about outlook? I had an experience long ago that, when I made a new account, I could not access the outlook files with the new account.

I'll try to do it as you suggest and see what happens.

Umbi, your procedure worked perfectly. Even Outlook works.

There is only one thing to add to this:
10.5 Run your email, Windows Live Messenger, gTalk, etc. You will have to re-enter all of your passwords.

03.04.2008 at 03:53PM PST, ID: 21046503
Another item:
10.6 Go to Control Panel/Date & Time. You may need to turn on Internet Time because when on a domine that option is not available (it comes from the domain server). Also I found that it took about 10 minuets for the tab to be available.

Another gotcha ... there was a file that had "Access denied". Explorer will not proceed after this error. So I used cmd and got into the destination directory and used xcopy as follows:
xcopy "\Documents and Settings\eddyq"\*.* /e /c /h /r /k /o /x /y >c:\this.txt
Then I examined c:\this.txt and searched for "Access denied" ... it turns out they were all in a temp directory so it didn't matter that they weren't copied.
