can someone tell me what is this file for? this file is 500mb in size on one of our server.

It is the HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT registry key

It shouldn't be that large. Check C:\System Volume Information. In that folder you'll find restore points, and in those you'll find a snapshot folder. Is the *_default file in there (should be like the fifth one in a snapshot folder) 500MB large?

hi ikk, this is a terminal server, hundred of users are connecting to this server. could this be the reason?

I double checked with a few people, and as far as I know, no, it shouldn't be. What are the average sizes of the hives in System Volume Information?
