Remote management configuration for Windows Server 2008 Core

Tags: Microsoft, Windows, 2008 Server Core, remote management
I've setup a Windows 2008 Core server, configured networking, etc successfully, but am having problems performing remote management (using MMC) from a Vista desktop.
The Windows 2008 Server is currently configured as a workgroup (no domain).

On the Vista desktop, I have setup a MMC, added the following snap-ins:
- Computer Management
- Group Policy Editor

Both are setup to connect to the Windows 2008 server (browsed for server, then added IP address under object name and clicked Check Names, which prompts me for user authentication - I entered the Administrator account).

I can click on the group policy and expand the tree (computer configuration, user configuration, etc), but when I attempt to change a parameter (e.g. Allow Basic authentication properties), I get an error message the "The Group Policy snapin was unable to save your changes due to the following error" Logon failure: unknown user or bad password"
Using Computer Management when I click on it, I isitially get an error for Event Viewer - Access is denied(5).  The tree expands, and I can access some functionality e.g. Reliability and Performance, but others e.g. Local Users and Groups gets an Access is denied error.
What so I need to configure?

Thanks
Neil

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

markcoach's post was VERY useful to me, but starting at File and Printer Sharing the values are flip-flopped

Please see this website for the correct rule group values:
http://blogs.technet.com/server_core/archive/2008/01/14/configuring-the-firewall-for-remote-management-of-a-workgroup-server-core-installation.aspx

I don't post this to dog on markcoach, like I said - this post was invaluable to me, I just wanted to post this link for clarification in case anyone else like me came along and couldn't get it to work.

Thanks!
