The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

How do I Setup small Network from XP laptop to Vista Desktop for a File Transfer?
Tags: Microsoft Vista, Vista, Home Premium
I am trying to Transfer Documents and Settings from an XP laptop to a New Vista home Premium Desktop.
Instead of using the transfer cable, I have setup a mini network between the two computers. I can see both the computers on the network, and I have done EVERYTHING option imaginable as far as Allowing, and Permissions. on both the individual Folders and the entire C:\. Simple File sharing is turned ON, and I have shared EVERYTHING with EVERYONE. and made it a " Co-Owner"  But I am still not being allowed to transfer files between the two.

Hi,
can you please go to command prompt on Vista machine and run the following command?
cacls folderpath
It will display the configured permissions, just paste it here and let me check it please.

Also - do you have share permissions configured correctly? (one is Share perms and another one NTFS perms).
Accepted Solution

Have you set the "Workgroup" name on both machines to the same value and set the IP addresses to be in the same subnet such as "192.168.1.xxx" or "10.whatever" according to a matching subnet mask such as "255.255.255.0"?

I have tried running the cacls folderpath
and I get nothing but a very quick flash on my screen and them nothing more..

And JesterToo, yes both machines have the same value, and the IP address have the same subnet mask

You have to FIRST open command prompt (cmd.exe) and type the command there, not in the Start -> Run.

Is your XP laptop and Vista desktop connected to the same router?  What is the ip address and subnet mask of the active network device of each machine?  Can you ping each other?  If you need detail steps for each test, please let us know.

The default gateway is not important since you are concerned with sharing resources within your network.

For two computers to share resources on a home network, the subnet mask must be identical, like JesterToo was posting.

For Command Prompt.

For Windows XP:
Click on Start/All Programs/Accessories/Command prompt

I did, and yes both are on the same,

04.25.2008 at 11:38AM PDT, ID: 21442170
what is the ip address of each machine and its subnet mask?

Can you ping each machine?

For example, see screen capture.

Ping result indicating communication is possible.

Just in case, you may want to check out my page on P2P file sharing..  (BTW:  I recommend you NOT use Simple File Sharing..  nothing simple about it..)

http://24.208.167.3/KipSolutions/P2PNetworks/TroubleshootingP2P.htm

I have not included Vista in this page yet, but it still may help you troubleshoot this issue...  (Sharing is not that much different in Vista, but configuring it is...  the principles are the same though)
