What else to do when system will not boot

Tags: VIsta 64 boot problems
I have a HP Pavillion 9500 laptop, just old enough to be out of warranty. (13 months)  It has 2g of ram, duo core processor, nvidia graphics, Windows Ultimate 64.

I shut it down normally, but could not get it to restart.
It goes past the initial boot screen with the enter-setup options.
It goes past the screen with a  Microsoft logo and a green progress bar at the bottom.
It does not get to the vista splash-welcome screen.  It gives a black screen, a mouse, and varying degrees of hd activity.

Booting to any of the safe mode options it loads drivers till it gets to window-system32-crcdisk.sys and hangs.
Ran the system restore utility to get access the checkdsk, which reported one error in a tmp file and corrected it.
No change in boot behavior.
In the pre-boot system restore I went into Windows system restore to try to set an earlier point and try again.  It reported that there were no restore points, which is very odd.
In the bios setup screen I ran hp diagnostics which said memory and hd were ok.
I got to a command prompt in the restore program and was able to backup the hd through a usb drive with no read errors.
After about 10 minutes of trying to boot, the hd activity ceases.
I removed the hd and battery and let them set a while, put them back in, same thing.  It stops at the black screen after the microsoft-progress meter screen and the welcome splash with a functional mouse.

Is there anything else to try or investigate before I go to the system recovery partition and (try) to restore it to factory settings?

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Sorry we couldn't fix your problem - maybe I'm just dumb, but I'm not sure Vista is worth the trouble.  Of course, I had similar feelings about XP some years ago.  However, the Vista issues seem to be an order of magnitude worse than those associated with XP.

My only reason to use Vista is the 64 bit support of >4 GB memory spaces.  This makes using Photoshop CS3 a lot less painful, especially with large image files.

I can do all my other work (better?) in Linux (and Gimp isn't too far behind CS3).
