When I select them I get: Unable to complete the operation on "Application" The interface is unknown.
I have tried restarting the services, overwriting services.exe, changing the path in the registry to wrap the imagepath with quotes, and there are no files in the system directory that shouldnt be there.
When I try to start the service up I get Error 193: 0xc1
Any help would be great.

My solution was to boot to an alternate OS (In my case, ERD Commander) and move the .EVT files out of c:\winnt\system32\config; then I ran a CHKDSK.
A different solution would be to disable the event log, reboot, move the .EVT files (while the system is not trying to use them), then re-enable & re-start the event log. Then go the the event viewer; the system should re-create them, if it does not, your problem lies elsewhere.

This may well work on XP, as he says.

It's worth reading this short report which just may have the answer>

Ok,fine. Well here is an article for "Error 193: %1 is not a valid Win32 application":

Here's another forum where the client renamed the file called 'program', and appears to have resolved the problem. This result is similar to my earlier link Although unusual, you may wish to search for a file by this name, and see if it helps>
Error 193: 0xc1 - Weird but solved!

Apart from these two suggestions, i must admit i'm beginning to run out of new ideas.
Finally figured out the problem. After checking all those solutions you guys provided (and I thank you) it happened to be a 0Kb file "EventLog.dll" in the system32 folder that was causing all this headache. I deleted the file and was able to start the service. Once I started the service the file was automatically recreated and is already 55Kb at this time.
Thanks again for all your help.
