Question

Start Windows Explorer with the C drive collapsed?

Asked by: dnscompanies

Is there a way to "Right" mouse click on the "Start" button and have the Windows Explorer open with the C drive collapsed? I don't use the C drive for anything besides holding my Windows installation and could not care less about seeing 45 levels deep into the current user profile. All of my data's on a the B drive (RAID 10 ) and it's mainly on that drive because it's easier to scroll up from all the garbage it spreads out on the C drive than it is down.  Not to mention B is never used for anything anyway.  Perhaps a registry key?

Save you a bit time from reading here. To get C drive as your default folder for Windows Explorer.

   1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then right-click Windows Explorer.
   2. On the menu that appears, click Properties.
   3. In the Target box, append the "/root" command-line switch to the "%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe" command, using the startup location that you want. For example, if you want Windows Explorer to start at the root of drive C, edit the command to the following:
      %SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /root, C:\
   4. Click OK.

Hey Guys... these are all great but after playing with each one of them it seems that none collapse the C drive when I Right mouse click on the Start button and choose Explore.

Currently it points to: C:\Users\ProfileName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\
Do you think someone won a contest at Microsoft for "most useless place to land" when you go into Windows Explorer?

Feels like a registry key to me... what do you think?

10. Make your drives invisible
Well this one can be used as a prank on your friends PC. With this trick you will be able to disable the display of drives when you click on my computer.

a). Go to start and open run, type regedit and enter  to open registry settings.

b). When regedit is opened browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer select explorer.

c).Now click Edit->New->DWORD value and name it as NoDrives and press enter.

d).Now double click it and enter the decimal number corresponding to the drive(s) you want to hide as listed in the table below, but dont forget to choose decimal value after double clicking NoDrives.

Drive Number to hide
A: 1
B: 2
C: 4
D: 8
E: 16
F: 32
G: 64
H: 128
I: 256
J: 512
K: 1024
L: 2048
M: 4096
N: 8192
O: 16384
P: 32768
Q: 65536
R: 131072
S: 262144
T: 524288
U: 1048576
V: 2097152
W: 4194304
X: 8388608
Y: 16777216
Z: 33554432
All drives 67108863

If you want to hide more than one drive than simply add the decimal values of both. For example if you want to hide c drive and drive then add 4 and 8 i.e. you will have to  enter 12. You will have to reboot your pc to see the changes. To show the drive again simply delete NoDrives.
