in my device manager I have yellow exclamations under Video Controller and Video Controller ( VGA ), I tried to update drivers, but was unsuccesful. I don't know if this makes a difference or not to try to resolving this problem. If it is, I dont have the software that came with the laptop, so I do I update the video drivers? How do I update the chipset drivers? I have a sony vaio VGN-TZ17MN.
That can very well be the cause of the standby problem.
You can find drivers here
http://www.sony-asia.com/s
(make sure the model matches)
Get at least this one:
* Graphics Driver Upgrade Program Version 7.14.10.1387c
but I'd give a try to this too (which will probably get more updates):
* VAIO Update Upgrade Program Version 4.0.0.08240
The video drivers are a separate issue.
As far as the hibernate goes, try the following command
POWERCFG /HIBERNATE on

Open the Device Manager and check if you have a device like
System Devices->Microsoft ACPI Complient System (and other ACPI devices)
