i want to assign a keyboard shortcut to a desktop shortcut. when i look at the properties i see the shortct key box and according to "MS Windows XP inside out 2nd ed" by Bott, Siechert and Stinson page 701, i should be able to type combinations of Ctrl, Alt, and Shift with a keyboard character, but it wont accept typing. it offers prearranged combinations. specifically, i would like to use a 2 key commbo such as Alt + X, but it won't take it.

If you are using Ctrl, Alt, or Shift they have to be combined with another key. You can however use any of the F keys as a quick opener without needing Ctrl, Alt, or Shift. There are some apps out there that might override this windows default, I personally just use the Object Dock from Stardock for my most frequently used apps.

2 key combos are reserved for Windows. This is why you must use 3 key combos or higher. I do not believe there is a way to get around this.
