Question

Can In "safely" Re-partition a HD into 3, from 1?

Asked by: Donnie616

Hi experts,

I have a new 250GB maxtor eide HDD with Win XP SP3 installed.  I forgot to make the partitions I needed.  I actually need 3 Partitions of about 83-- GB each, instead of one @250GB.

QUESTION IS:  Can this be done safely without data loss orb File corruption and are there any free, open-source SW that might be good for this job.  I have NEVER done anything of this sort, other than when I originally set up windows on a HDD.  But not after I have already installed windows.  I am ready to learn.

Also, will I be able to safely install a, additional, different  OS on these other Partitions after I create them?

thank you experts, so much in advance,

Donnie616

Partition Magic .. should be able to do this ..  but i do not assume that it would be free..

Hi it is possible to re size the partition but I strongly recommend NOT to do it as the performance will greatly degrade. It might also lead to loss of partitions if the partitioning software goes corrupt. Any way, here is the link if you still want to do it.

Gparted (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ ) is a good and free utility like Partition Magic that will let you resize your partitions without losing data. I do recommend that you backup your data just in case, but I have never lost any data doing this. The following guide will help you resize your disk:

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/resize/resizing.htm

I hope this helps. Good luck.

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

There's a live CD for download.

Read the FAQ carefully as to how it behaves with NTFS.  You'll need to reboot to NTFS after each resize.

>> Also, will I be able to safely install an additional, different  OS on these other Partitions after I create them?

You should be able to, but be careful and read all documentation before you do.

Note that ntfsresize is available on Live Linux CDs.  I suspect the Knoppix CD would have it.  This might be a better option for resizing your present partition than the first link above.

I would be very cautious of that link.  That is probably a pirated hacked version of the commercial product.

by: memo_tntPosted on 2009-01-15 at 14:13:21ID: 23388411

No it's Freeware,, if it's hacked then it needs either patch file or KeyGen to activate it
why it's bootable then ??!

Try it ,, it support Windows and Linux !!!

Thanks to all.

I have to decide which is easiest for me.  I already have GParted and Knoppix.  I have very little experience with them, so I have to be careful.  that is what you are telling me, so I will check out all the options from you all and get back to you.  i also have Paragon hard Disk Manager.  I just do not know how to use these tools.

thanks

Apologies.

Your second link is to PartEd.  I misread your first posting as a direct link to Partition Magic and not and editor something like Partition Magic.

i do not know of degrading caused by partitioning...
the best tool i know for this (free for what you want) is bootit-ng : www.terabyteunlimited.com/
when you run it (from a cd or floppy) -don't install it on the disk; hit Esc or cancel
then resize your partition to 80 Gb (or whatever)
then create the other partitions, and done
i never had any problems with this one (it looks a bit geeky - but it works always, and on all OS)
a good thing to do is testing your disk first, to be sure it is ok; because ANY partitioning soft will fail on a BAD disk...

Do Not know if asker will revisit this question but I have to concur with nobus.
bootng from terabytes is one of the best written freeware utilities ever. I have used it
at least 100 times and never had any problems. It is worth taking the time to figure out
how to use it. Obviously the creators spent all of the time getting the function right instead of
prettying up the front end to look fancy.

The fact that it runs from its own boot session (from a floppy or cd image) eliminates all the
problems that can be caused from programs like partition "Tragic" which have to copmete with windows
(and perhaps viri or spyware) for cpu time.

bootitng runs with 100% control of cpu and data read writes which is critical when re-partioning.

Some tips if you decide to try it(some mentioned all ready).

Download a disk diag program(such as seatools) to make sure the physical disk is okay.

Clean up the original partition by uninstalling any programs not used anymore.
Delete all temporary files.

Run scandisk to delete any crossed linked sectors.

Run defrag(from safe mode where it is faster).

Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in on this one because I am such a big fan of
terabytes for making such a womderful disk utility available free of charge,

Good look with you partitioning,

tandy

Thank you all.  i did not go anywhere but online and  that machine.  i was not successful until I used Bootit-ng.  Nobus, you taught me about that one awhile ago and i had a disk  already made.  It takes a while with this Sr.citizen to have things sink in, so I was spending lots of time trying to figure out how to run things correctly.  That is where I was all  this time.  Sorry but time just passed by me.

Nobus you brought up the old SW that did the trick for me, but Tandy, your 2 cents did, in fact, assist me. Really ,so  i feel I must share some of the points.  Even the negatives about certain SW was of benefit to me.And i am grateful for that.  Nobus, you have a knack for popping up in my FAQ's in the nick of time.  I thank you for that.

Thank you all for your input.

Nobus you did it again. Thank you.  I am really learning a lot here.  But I had no idea i had the answer right in my pile of rescue/boot disks.  None at all.
