Windows Event Log Error (Event ID:4321, Source NetBT)

I am seeing these errors within a quite a few machines.  Error reads,
"The name 'xxxxx       :1d" could not be registered on the interface with IP address
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. The machine with the IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xx did not allow the name to be claimed by this machine. The last two sets of x's represent an ip address.

I also wanted to find out if this type of error will cause applications to freeze or lockup. We're running windows xp pro clients on a Windows 2003 Active Directory domain.

We have recently switched to Symantec Client Security to Symantec Endpoint Protection, would this be causing these entries in the event log ?

I think the error seems to suggest that there was an IP conflict.  Two systems claiming the same IP.  If the IPs are of a private nature: 10.x.x.x, 172.16-31.x.x or 192.168.x.x there is no point in hiding them.  These IPs can and exist on many internal networks.  These IPs can not be accessed from the outside without a VPN.

Or, you have a firewall that is configured to limit an IP to a specific MAC address.

Symantec definitely had a part in this problem. I believe we've resolved this situation by updating the few clients which did not have the latest symantec loaded. Thank you for your help.
