Question

Remote Desktop Connection Session Logging

Asked by: pburns02

I have disabled the auto log off for users that have logged in to the server. and instead of logging off they just close the remote desktop window leaving their session open. Is there a script or program that will generate a list of users who haven't logged off, but just closed the remote desktop window?

I want to use this list to send them e-mails explaining how to log off correctly.

No I don't want it to end their session. I had this on before and no one was learning and it made the problem worse. I want it to keep them logged in, but i want a script or program that will make a list of users who are still connected, but their session isn't in a active state.

This way I can run that script or prgram daily, and with the list it generates send e-mails to those users explaing how to log out correctly.

You could try a bit of VBScript called from Scheduled Tasks.

I've made up something below but afraid I can't test as at the moment I'm on a machine without admin rights.

Think it should work though when run with admin rights.

'Login Check Script

'VARIABLE - Output File Path
FileOut = "C:\Logged In Users.txt"

'VARIABLE Set Open Text File to Append
Const Appending = 8

'Create the output file or open it
Set objFS = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
If objFS.FileExists(FileOut) Then
Set objFile = objFS.OpenTextFile(FileOut, Appending, True)
Else
Set objFile = objFS.CreateTextFile(FileOut)
objFile.WriteLine "Username" &";"& "Full Name"
End If

'Checked logged in users

strComputer = "."

Set objWMI = GetObject("winmgmts:" _
	& "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" _
	& strComputer & "\root\cimv2")

Set colSessions = objWMI.ExecQuery _
	("Select * from Win32_LogonSession Where LogonType = 10")

For Each objSession in colSessions
     	Set colList = objWMI.ExecQuery("Associators of " _
		& "{Win32_LogonSession.LogonId=" & objSession.LogonId & "} " _
		& "Where AssocClass=Win32_LoggedOnUser Role=Dependent" )

For Each objItem in colList
	Set objComputer = CreateObject("Shell.LocalMachine")
	objFile.WriteLine objItem.Name &";"& objItem.FullName
      Next
   Next

WScript.Quit

This is actually almost exactly what I need. However, this gives me a list of all the users logged in to the machine. Is there a way that you can have it show just the disconnected users that are attached in this screen shot I've attached.

Thanks

Sorry but think I'll have to pass on that.

I can't find the WMI class that contains the session status

Unless it's Win32_LogonSession.Status but that always seems to return as null

You need someone who knows their WMI classes better than me in here.

strRun = "command.com /c query session > c:\log.txt"
objShell.Run strRun, 1, True

this command was exactly what i needed
