I have plenty of drives, as I said I've already tried 5 different drives. All drives were working fine just minutes before the re-install. I have a hard time thinking that this is just cable that bad in the time of a reboot. I''ve used both IDE and SATA drives, to ellimate the possibility of controllers, cables, drives, etc. I get the same result every time.

I've never low-level formatted a drive in hopes of using it again. Having encountered this many times over the years, I've found the easiest, and actually cost-effective way to deal with this is to simply have a spare drive on hand.
If you have access to one, I would try installing on another hard drive, which could help isolate something in the chain (bad cable, bad on-board controller).
