Are you running through automatic updates or the windows update website? Go to www.windowsupdate.com > upgrade to microsoft update if still on windows update > choose custom when asked > scan your system to see the available updates and install all priority and optional updates > at the end, it should tell you which ones were completed and which ones failed.
If all the updates failed, you will need to re-register the .dll files associated with windows updates. Save the following code to a text file and name it regsvr32.bat then double-click on the file and allow it to run:
c:\windows\system32\regsvr
c:\windows\system32\regsvr
c:\windows\system32\regsvr
c:\windows\system32\regsvr
c:\windows\system32\regsvr
c:\windows\system32\regsvr
c:\windows\system32\regsvr
If that still doesn't work, you may need to dump the update files from your machine. Turn off auto updates or disable the service > delete the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistrib
Let us know if this doesn't solve the problem,

Two options:
uninstall the update, then allow it to install again. That most likely will take care of it.
Other option is as follows:
You go to the Windows Update site, View List of Updates, find the update in question, right-click it, and select *Hide*. The update will not be attempted again for that particular one again.
