What kind of computer is it? I had a Gateway do that because the motherboard video had a problem where it had a hardware failure where accessing the video disabled the harddrive access. Yes, really. I used a Knoppix Live CD to look at it. If I used 16-bit video, I could look at the harddrive and if I used 24-bit video I couldn't.

You could try to enter safe mode, and see if that works.
If not you always can take out your hard drive and hook it up to another pc.
