Question

BlackBerry Professional Software Installation didn't create BESMgmt SQL database

Asked by: tjmustang

I have a SBS 2003 server and installed the BlackBerry Professional Software.  The installation didn't create the BESMgmt SQL DB and pointed to an existing SQL DB on my server.  I get an error message saying that it can't find the DB when I click next.  BlackBerry's installation instructions indicates that the Setup.exe program should ask me if I want to create the DB when I click next.  How can I manually create the DB?

The following may help.  Are you doing the install logged in as besadmin?  Remember also that you are entitled to one free support call with this software (even the free download).

In your screenshot, you've got local selected, but a different database server name.

I would guess if you selected remote and tried again, that may help.

Tried that Quetzal and still get the attached error.

Database is jpeg is BDESMgmt, should be BESMgmt.  You are also accessing sql  server/db with the credentials of the user running the install.  If that is not besadmin, it might be an issue.

BES installs MSDE by default (which you generally don't want). I suggest you cancel the BES install, download a copy of SQL Express 2005 SP2 Advanced, install that and create a \BES named instance. Once done, go back through your BES install and point it to hostname\BES (or whatever you named it). If you already have an existing SQL instance and know it's name, try the same thing as above HOSTNAME\INSTANCE and also make sure you can connect to the SQL server over port 1433 - you can check by telnet SQLSERVER 1433. If you get dumped into an empty void you should be good, if not you need to examine your SQL connection properties.

I changed the Dir name to BESMgmt.........I typred the D in the Dir name b mistake when I created it thinking it would help Setup.exe create the new DB for BB Pro software.

Are you sure it's not related to this:

by: tjmustangPosted on 2009-06-05 at 06:20:26ID: 24556068

Not sure, I am installing the BB Pro on my SBS server (Exchange server) PDC01 and so I think it should say local and then my server name.

OK, Change your Data Directory and Backup Directory to:

C:\Progs\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data
and
C:\Progs\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup

Does your SQL Server run under the default instance e.g. hostname.yourdomain.net or a named instance e.g. hostname\SBS ?

Ensure SQL is running too...

by: Mighty_SillyPosted on 2009-06-05 at 10:41:31ID: 24558611

Umm... Is the SQL server the same physical server you're trying to install BPS?
Have you done anything special separately to create the BESmgmt database?

Hi, I assume your PDC01 server is actually running a named SQL instance.  Open the SQL Monitor in the bottom left corner and let us know what the name is listed as e.g. PDC01\BACKUPEXEC

SQL monitor has PDC01\FAX
We run a fax server on PDC01

by: ubabunskiPosted on 2009-06-09 at 01:46:30ID: 24579201

Hi,

you should try the server name PDC01\FAX for the sql server name. That is the name of your instance.

best regards

Hi ubabunski:

That got me thru the rest of the install.....but I can't find where to get the code/PIN for my one BlackBerry device that will use this software.  I did the MAPI set up and everything looks like it is set up.

by: ubabunskiPosted on 2009-06-09 at 05:59:42ID: 24580587

Hi,

You can find your blackberry device pin under menu->options->status. Why do you need it? After the install all you have to do is to go to blackberry manager add your user account to the blackberry manager and set the activation password. You can check if you set the permissions ok on the bes user account by right clicking your user account in blackberry manager and selecting choos folders for redirect. If you can see your folders than the permissions are ok and you can set your activation password and activate the device.

best regards

by: tjmustangPosted on 2009-06-09 at 06:35:36ID: 24580925

I added the user and the status says "Initialzing".....I also get an error when I try to choose folders for redirection.

by: tjmustangPosted on 2009-06-09 at 06:39:26ID: 24580982

I also get an error when I open the Black Berry Manager
"Failed to open the default message store using the MAPI Profile 'BlackBerryManager' Please review the log for details.  You will not be able to send messages from BlackBerry Manager by email.

by: ubabunskiPosted on 2009-06-09 at 06:39:51ID: 24580989

Hi,

That means that you didn't do everything by the "book". The only guide I have found on the internet for installing BPS on SBS 2003 is by Gari Cutri. You can find it here:
http://forums.pinstack.com/showthread.php?t=13491
Make sure to thank the author for the guide.
From what you are saying you are having a permission problem. Make sure that the blackberry user account is exchange view only administrator on your exchange server and that on the mailbox server it has send as, receive as and administer information store permissions. Everything you need to know about this is inside the guide from Gary.

best regards

Thanks to everyone.  Al your help got me almost there...Ubadunski helped the most.  I spent 2 hours on the phone with RIM and got it working.  They acked that their program doesn't load well on SBS and strange things are still going on....but it's working.....def not an Iphone or Windows mobile set up with Exchange.
