Check too, the control panel that came with your audio hardware
- make sure all sound effects processing are turned off
eqa;izer off
speakers set to 2-1 (the old standard)
mono / stereo set right - then flip it.
worse case, some install fragged you sound drivers - re-install the sound drivers (and possibly the chipset drivers).

anything plugged into the speaker jack? (headphones?)
check the sound from the control panel - press start button - control panel - then the sound icon
this will show you what hardware it is using for sound
