Question

How do I remove worstations from domain?

Asked by: t6bill

I have a Windows 2003 standard server with two NIC's that was once a domain controller.  It has been demoted to a standalone server.  Two XP pro workstations connect to it.  One Nic is connected to a cable modem.  The other is connected to a router.  The server's name is Server.companyname.local.  The workstation names are:  BackOffice.companyname.local  & FrontOffice.companyname.local.  The server's full name is:  Server.companyname.local.  How do I remove all traces of the former domain, without affecting current network connectivity?  I can browse anywhere on the server I wish, through Network places, Windows Network.  But Network Places does still show the server.local.

There are two NICs in the server.  One connects to a cable modem, the other to a router.  One Nic serves as the default gateway for the workstations, with the IP of 192.168.16.2.  It hands out Ip addresses to the workstations.

Please help, software I am trying to install on server will not connect through workstations because of this issue.

t6bill,

Try -Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Active Directory Domains and Trusts.  You should be able to remove traces of the old domain from here, although I have not tried deleting them before (not the easiest thing to play around with!)

Do you mean on the workstations or the server?  I, too, am very worried about doing this.  i wouldn't try if it wasn't for the software i need to install REQUIRING all systems to be members of a workgroup.  I don't understand why all traces of the domain were not removed when the server was demoted?

Have you dropped the workstations for the domain yet?

(Right click "My Computer", Properties, "Computer Name" tab.)

Here you will see the full computer name.  If you still see backoffice.companyname.local, click the "Change" button.  Under the new window, click more...make sure "Change primary DNS suffix..." is checked.  Click okay or cancel accordinly.  When the window is gone, click the workgroup dial, and name it whatever you want.  (requires reboot)

Would this also work for changing the server name?  Under Network Places, I can browse anywhere on the server I want, IF, and only If I go through the Workgroup icon.  Under that icon the server is listed simply as 'Server".  I think I need to change the name of the Server from server.companyname.local to just "server".  What options do I have to rename this demoted Server?  I may be wrong, but I think I need to get its name to simply "Server", then try renaming the workstations as you suggest.  Am I way off?  This server was demoted the suggested way through Manage Your Server, don't understand why I'm unable to change the computer name.  Hey, thanks for the suggestions so far, by the way!  Definitely shedding some light in my darkness!

What is so weird is that the software I'm trying to install is QuickBooks POS 8.0.  It integrates with QuickBooks Pro 2009.  I installed 2009 on the server and connecting to it from the workstation flawlessly this morning.  POS must connect to ITS particular data file in a different way.  QuickBooks POS tech support said it would NOT work the way it was currently set up.  Don't know if this info is relevant/helpful but thought I'd better post it anyway.  Will any of this affect the way the workstations connect to the internet and network?
