how to hide or protect internal hard drives from accesses when i boot externally

Is there a way to protect and make the internal hard drives not accessible completely through SW, when I boot externally ?

I have installed an XP on an external drives. It was intended for my kids to use the computer without messing with my internal hard drives. I worry they browse around the web, get virus, spywares and all sorts of things that may infect my local drives.

But having the computer boot externally still not that secure. Is there a way in windows xp to shield the internal hard drives from accessing if I boot from an external drives ?

I know I can do that in window 2000 before. But I don't know how to do it in Window xp.
