I have two drives, each with its own copies of Windows 2000. If I make either the first boot drive in the BIOS, it will boot OK, but I would like to be able to choose which one to boot from without changing the BIOS settings.
However, if I choose a system from another drive, I always get a message to say that the file ntoskrnl.exe cannot be found.

Yes. In fact it was the only drive at the time.
The only relevant item in that list in the link is about the 7.8gB limit. However, if I make the 'second' drive the boot drive in the BIOS, it boots OK.
But it has a boot.ini that references the 'first' drive. Again, It reports the same error (missing 'ntoskrnl.exe ') if I select the OS on the first drive- rdisk(0).
That might be acceptable, but I'm not sure that I follow the logic.
At the moment I s run one of three OSs, Win 2000, and Win 2000 server, and Win 2000 on the second drive . I want to replace the Win2000 (workstation ) on the second drive with XP, and to be able to select that OS at boot time.
All the documentation says, simply set your OS boot drive so:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)par
and all will be well
But it isn't
In general that is true - if you installed the OS with both drives hooked up.
If not, what happens is that each drive thinks it is the C drive , when booted individually.
If you install XP over WIn 2k workstation on the 2nd drive, then you should be fine.
Just do it with both drive hooked up, and booting from the first drive with both OSes already installed.
If there is no data needed, then during XP install, delete and recreate new partitions on the 2nd drive.

did you install the windows on the second disk while it was the active one?
that might then be the problem, as the file ntoskrnl, as to the installation, was on the "other" disk, which is however no longer on the same "place"...
