BigSchmuh....I've been advised about Hard Partitioning and I haven't a clue of what this means. Is there any possible way for me to tie just one CPU to an application?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI have a server with 4 CPU's and various applications running on this server. One application states that for each CPU on the server, a license needs to be bought. How can I tie 1 CPU to that one particular application? How can this be done from an OS perspective or hardware configuration? I was informed about the term "Hard Partitioning" but have no clue how to get this done. Would truly appreciate some guidance and assistance in this area, please.

Start the application, Open task manager, Click the Processes tab, In the list of processes, Right click the name and click "set affinity". You will see all the CPU's (logical and phyical) listed....usually all will be checked, empty out the boxes untill you have one checked.
This is the closest thing i can think of right now to wha you want to do.
You can try StartAffinity launch cmd that is supposed to do that for you

Usually, those license writers does not care of the logical filters you may have implemented to restrict the physical capability of your host.
I mean the license may NOT allow you any filtering at all.
I think the way to go is virtualization.
==> Building a 1 CPU VM in a 4 CPU host may render your platform suitable to the license.
