Question

CD & DVD drives will not eject under WinXP

Asked by: ddantes

I just upgraded my system from Windows 2000 to Windows XP Professional SP-3.  After the upgrade, my CD & DVD drives will not eject with the button, or by right-clicking the drive and selecting "eject."   The drives are recognized under Windows, and there is drag and drop function.  I am not using third-party CD-writing software, such as Nero.  I have tried enabling and disabling the record function on these drives, without any change in the ejection behavior.

right click on my computer > select properties >
chose the hardware tab >
click device manager >

expand the DVD/cd-rom drives on the tree
(is the device showing a triangle - mine always says it is working fine)
right click the offending drive  select disable okay any warnings and wait for the screen to refresh  then right click the drive again and select enable.
exit out of the device manager and try the drive again.

Hello ram kerala: thank you for your comment.  The CD & DVD in Device Manager do not have a yellow triangle -- they are reported as working properly.  I disabled, waited for refresh, enabled, and waited for refresh.  The eject button still does not work.

Please try by ejecting CD Drive From Device Manager (My computer Right Click / Manage > Disk management

See are finding any error in eventvwr when you are ejecting ?

by: jackiemanPosted on 2009-10-23 at 21:10:32ID: 25650745

Are you running your Window XP in a notebook? Notebook has power saving function and the CD & DVD will be put into disabled mode if it is running on battery.

by: ddantesPosted on 2009-10-23 at 21:16:11ID: 25650763

ram kerala: thank you for your comment.  Attempting to eject a CD using Disk Manager failed.  There was an error message which attributed the failure to open files.  However, the DVD drive has no disk, and the eject also failed.  I am attaching the Event Viewer reports.

?

by: ddantesPosted on 2009-10-24 at 09:06:00ID: 25652776

nobus:  thank you for your comment.  The links point to articles relating to CD drives which are missing or not recognized by Windows.  Since my situation is different,  I am reluctant to apply the remedy when the drive is recognized, and files can be written to the CD or DVD.  What do you advise?

ram kerala: thank you for your comment.  No such hardware changes were made.  The drives eject fine under Windows 2000 (which is still installed).  I cloned the Windows 2000 installation and upgraded it to Windows XP, so it is a dual-boot system.

by: nobusPosted on 2009-10-24 at 09:36:37ID: 25652938

to try it - it does not harm in any way

by: ddantesPosted on 2009-10-24 at 10:38:32ID: 25653284

nobus:  I applied the CD-DVD Fix.  The CD will now eject, but files cannot be written to it (with or without a check in the "enable recording" box on drive properties).  The DVD drive (which has no disk) does not eject.

by: ram_keralaPosted on 2009-10-24 at 11:14:02ID: 25653482

There is a conflict in sharing the files, that is the reason you are not able to reject the Drive. That is what we could see from the event logs snaps and Disk Management.

Requesting you to re-install the Chipset and Input Drivers from the Motherboard CD.

As there is no HW Changes done in your machine, and there is no Software installed to manage CD/DVD drive, the culprit will be Device Driver / Windows Files itself.

by: ram_keralaPosted on 2009-10-24 at 11:17:04ID: 25653493

Windows Repair / Reinstall is the last option availble, as you have dual OS,we will try to resolve from here itself

by: ddantesPosted on 2009-10-24 at 12:57:00ID: 25653985

When I tried re-installing the IDE drivers from the motherboard installation CD, there was an error message that an installable virtual device drive failed initialization.  So I ran sfc /scannow.  That did not help with either the driver re-installation or the DVD drive ejection.

by: ddantesPosted on 2009-10-24 at 18:14:10ID: 25655107

I am reluctant to undertake a Windows repair installation, so I plan to replace the DVD drive and then post again.  I have ordered the part, but it may take a week or so for it to arrive, so please be patient.  Since the Event Viewer shows Event ID 9 & 11, I am inclined to think this is a hardware issue.  If replacing the drive doesn't resolve it, I will try the Windows repair installation.

by: ram_keralaPosted on 2009-10-24 at 18:24:10ID: 25655132

You can also remove this CD / DVD Drive and connect with any of your friends machine  to verify if it a Hardware issue.

If it is Dell / HP Machines, i guess you will have diagonistic tool along with the machine you will able to identify it easily.

======

Also how the motherboard reinstallation goes when the Drive is not connected?

Another thing is ,are you find any issue in using drive from Windows 2000?

If it is working fine,I am pretty sure a re-install will resolve the issue
Ram

The DVD drive does not eject under Windows 2000.  I guess I failed to notice this because I seldom use that drive, but after installing WinXP I tested everything and discovered the failure.  Once I remove the DVD drive I will try the motherboard driver installation again.

by: ram_keralaPosted on 2009-10-24 at 18:57:46ID: 25655193

OK. But requesting to have a look at jumper settings and cable connections too
As a best practice, we need to run some kind of health check programs to confirm the stabilty and performance of the machine

by: ddantesPosted on 2009-10-24 at 20:16:09ID: 25655374

Jumper settings are correct and cable connections are firm.  With the IDE cable removed, and only the power connected, pressing the eject button does not open the tray or light the LED.  I believe this is a hardware failure, and will post again after replacing the DVD drive.   The problem with re-installing motherboard drivers was fixed by a registry repair.

Yes it is hardware  issue..

by: nobusPosted on 2009-10-25 at 00:12:15ID: 25655787

does it work if you uninstall all the burning software?

by: ddantesPosted on 2009-10-28 at 11:11:07ID: 25686385

nobus:  I tried installing Nero In-CD, and the CD drive works but the DVD drive still does not eject.  I expect a replacement DVD drive any day, and will post again after I install lit.

by: nobusPosted on 2009-10-28 at 11:26:36ID: 25686569

i suggest not to use in-cd, since nobody can read those cd's without having it installed

Do you have a suggestion for software with drag-and-drop capability which is compatible with Windows XP and Windows 7?

Nero can do that, open in express mode to make the things easier

i suggest not using Incd, you cannot read the cd's without installing the incd reader !
my advice : don't use drag and rop, but copy

by: ddantesPosted on 2009-10-30 at 19:11:10ID: 25708066

A new DVD drive ejects properly, so it was a hardware issue.  The  old DVD drive happened to fail at the same time as I upgraded my operating system.  Because of the coincidence, I assumed there was a software or configuration issue, but it was just a part failure.

by: nobusPosted on 2009-10-31 at 01:09:56ID: 25708845

well - i'm not happy.
you asked about "CD & DVD drives will not eject under WinXP"  and i answered that correct;
then you ask 2 more questions which i answered also; but did not get ANY credit

by: ddantesPosted on 2009-10-31 at 11:10:18ID: 25710814

modus operandi:  My question for the experts pertained to a CD drive and DVD drive which would not eject disks. Nobus contributed valid observations and suggestions.  On reconsideration, his recommendation to apply a certain script did resolve the CD ejection issue.  As for the DVD, ram kerala correctly assessed it as a hardware issue, and replacing the drive resolved it.  So, please divide the points evenly between these solutions:  250 points for comment 10/23/09 09:21 PM, ID: 25651162 and 250 points for comment 10/24/09 05:30 PM, ID: 25655410.  Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
