I just upgraded my system from Windows 2000 to Windows XP Professional SP-3. After the upgrade, my CD & DVD drives will not eject with the button, or by right-clicking the drive and selecting "eject." The drives are recognized under Windows, and there is drag and drop function. I am not using third-party CD-writing software, such as Nero. I have tried enabling and disabling the record function on these drives, without any change in the ejection behavior.

ram kerala: thank you for your comment. Attempting to eject a CD using Disk Manager failed. There was an error message which attributed the failure to open files. However, the DVD drive has no disk, and the eject also failed. I am attaching the Event Viewer reports.

nobus: thank you for your comment. The links point to articles relating to CD drives which are missing or not recognized by Windows. Since my situation is different, I am reluctant to apply the remedy when the drive is recognized, and files can be written to the CD or DVD. What do you advise?
ram kerala: thank you for your comment. No such hardware changes were made. The drives eject fine under Windows 2000 (which is still installed). I cloned the Windows 2000 installation and upgraded it to Windows XP, so it is a dual-boot system.
There is a conflict in sharing the files, that is the reason you are not able to reject the Drive. That is what we could see from the event logs snaps and Disk Management.
Requesting you to re-install the Chipset and Input Drivers from the Motherboard CD.
As there is no HW Changes done in your machine, and there is no Software installed to manage CD/DVD drive, the culprit will be Device Driver / Windows Files itself.
I am reluctant to undertake a Windows repair installation, so I plan to replace the DVD drive and then post again. I have ordered the part, but it may take a week or so for it to arrive, so please be patient. Since the Event Viewer shows Event ID 9 & 11, I am inclined to think this is a hardware issue. If replacing the drive doesn't resolve it, I will try the Windows repair installation.
You can also remove this CD / DVD Drive and connect with any of your friends machine to verify if it a Hardware issue.
If it is Dell / HP Machines, i guess you will have diagonistic tool along with the machine you will able to identify it easily.

Another thing is ,are you find any issue in using drive from Windows 2000?
If it is working fine,I am pretty sure a re-install will resolve the issue

Jumper settings are correct and cable connections are firm. With the IDE cable removed, and only the power connected, pressing the eject button does not open the tray or light the LED. I believe this is a hardware failure, and will post again after replacing the DVD drive. The problem with re-installing motherboard drivers was fixed by a registry repair.

modus operandi: My question for the experts pertained to a CD drive and DVD drive which would not eject disks. Nobus contributed valid observations and suggestions. On reconsideration, his recommendation to apply a certain script did resolve the CD ejection issue. As for the DVD, ram kerala correctly assessed it as a hardware issue, and replacing the drive resolved it. right click on my computer > select properties >
chose the hardware tab >
click device manager >
expand the DVD/cd-rom drives on the tree
(is the device showing a triangle - mine always says it is working fine)
right click the offending drive select disable okay any warnings and wait for the screen to refresh then right click the drive again and select enable.
exit out of the device manager and try the drive again.
