Question

Why won't windows start?

Asked by: t6bill

I have a Toshiba laptop that won't load Windows Vista.  I don't have a restore disk.  It will load Windows in Safe mode, but not regularly.  I was getting this error:   C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop  is not accessible.  Access is denied."   Now it won't load at all except for Safe mode.  I don't have a Restore disk, and would have to buy one in any case.  Can anyone give me some ideas on how to fix this?  I am running Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

if you go to the location as mentioned in the error (i.e.
C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop
is not accessible. Access is denied. - the "Desktop") and right click then go to
properties, then go to the Security tab and click edit, you'll then be
able to restore access by making sure
all boxes under the heading "allow" have a tick in them.

Sounds like it could be a bad sector on the hard drive.  Since you can get into Safe Mode, try scanning the hard drive and "automatically fix errors" and see if that helps.

Under the Security tab, all boxes are checked, but appear grayed-out.  The one exception is "Special Permissions".  The Desktop folder is empty.

If you can still go to Safe Mode, try the following:-

1. Open My Computer

2. Right-click the local drive C drive and click Properties

3. Go to the Tools tab and click "Check Now" button

4. You will be prompted with UAC, click Continue

5. A new window will be pop up and check on both check boxes in front of of "Automatically fix file system error" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".

Finish the error checking of disk first.

It will take at least 3 hours.

In the interest of time, I backed up files while in safe mode and then did the system restore.  (Found the restore disk)
