Question

I/O conflict intalling external USB drive

Asked by: Fermanl

A few months ago I got this 1 Tera (2X500) external drive from Iomega - https://iomega-eu-en.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/iomega_eu_en.cfg/php/enduser/warranty_validator.php?p_sid=nfuvIXKj&p_lva=18092&p_li=&p_sp=&p_slvl=18102&prod_lvl1=3&prod_lvl2=&cat_lvl1=&p_prods=3&p_cats=&p_pv=1.3&p_cv=&p_flow=1&p_icf_6=JPAH33C316

The drive has worked good and I have a lot of data in there; but recently it started with problems I suspect stem from overheating and finaly colapsed. I think that the problem is on the box circuitry and that the disks are good. I tried to get an empty similar box but I couldn't find it on the market and Iomega does not provide it either - Iomega would replace my drive for a new one, but that meant to lose all the data.

So I got a box from Conceptronics, installed the disks and software and connected it to my PC. Everything has been detected and installed. 57xx SteelVine Manager (the app that manages the disks) declares everything OK. As for Explorer, at first it didn't even detect the drive and the whole computer was awful sluggish. After a lot of cleanage on my system  Explorer detects the new volume, but when I try to unflod it I get this message 'L:\ is not accessible.
The request could not be performed because of an I/o device error.'
Can you help me to correct this I/O  problem?

Thank you

Check in the computer management console | storage | Disk management and see if the drive is active and gets a drive letter.

Install Acronis Disk Director and check and fix the volume..

To shamsudeen:

The enclosed image shows you that the drive is detected in WinExplorer (Drive L:) but has no letter assigned in the dik management.
I'll check now for Acronis Disk Director and fix the volume.

You have no volume on that drive. Did you ask IOmega support if they use common stripe RAID with NTFS formatting in their drives?

by: shamsudeenPosted on 2009-11-07 at 21:33:04ID: 25769512

did you try on Mac machine .

If it is striped, your data is probably history. If a dynamic volune, a recovery tool such as GetDataBack should be able to recover it. Never run any sort of "fix" until you know exactly what the setup is. If you did not ask the questions mentioned by noxcho, do so now. Outside chance if you buy another unit and install the drives, it may work right off, but may be wasted money. Otherwise a commercial data recovery company will be able to assist.

I would reconnect the drives back to original enclosure of Iomega and check if there is any way to bring it to life.

by: FermanlPosted on 2009-11-08 at 04:59:06ID: 25770331

To burrcm:

GetDataBack displays the enclosed image 'GetDataBack_Fermanl20091108.jpg'. A brief scan shows the data is on the drive. Now how to recover it?
Wouldn't it be easier to solve the I/O adress problem and let the drive be normally managed through Explorer?

by: MidnightOnePosted on 2009-11-08 at 07:41:02ID: 25770764

Your first priority is recover the data, then worry about addressing the I/O issue. As it stands now, you don't have the data safe. Screwing with the external drive in that state may make all data on that drive unrecoverable.

by: FermanlPosted on 2009-11-08 at 08:16:58ID: 25770869

Would one of the gentlemen suggest the next concrete and efficient step?

by: noxchoPosted on 2009-11-08 at 09:36:41ID: 25771124

If GetDataBack sees the drive data (sorry your screen is not the best quality and I could hardly see what is there on it) then recover it. When done reformat the drive.
BTW, does it see all your data or some files only?

by: biolgbPosted on 2009-11-08 at 10:54:51ID: 25771401

I suggest that you just slave it in your PC just to get your data and just have IOMEGA replace it because it looks that your interface units both what you have and what you have bought are having problems. I have never seen this on a fully working interface unit. I think you could still get your data.

by: burrcmPosted on 2009-11-09 at 02:15:25ID: 25774637

I can't work out from your capture whether you are seeing the data on the iomega disk. I would not expect to see C:\Documents and Settings etc on an external data drive, and this seems to be just one directory. I note that you have selected a partition, but it suggests above that you get the best result selecting the entire drive. If you can see the data structure, then I would expect you should be able to slave the drive directly to recover, but since you said this results in an error, I would buy the program and proceed to recover before anything else goes wrong.

Well, friends, I'm deeply sorry - I finaly found the origin of the problem: simply a broken energy  transformer!... It's more than absurd, I had two transformers (one from Iomega and the other from an old LaCie) and both were broken! Several technicians run them and did not find the problem either! Today I decided to store the drives once again on Iomega and make it's burial for another drive. Just before packing it occurred to me to test the Conceptronic feeder - and flash, the drive started running, was recognized and everything was normal! Absolutely incredible - yet true! Then I checked the other transformers - there was an almost unnoticeable hummimg sound coming from them - that was it, they both were damaged. Well, it's been a month of lost work, a broken car in the meanwhile and the new drive - but the problem is solved.

Ence, points for me - and keep this an advise for anyone in simmilar circumstances.

Thank you all!
