Have a look at the contents - it's very likely to be a temporary file location created by a Windows update or service pack containing the original verisons of updated files to allow you to "roll back" to a previous version if needed.

Let's check 1. first then look at 2 when you've decided if you want to keep it :)

If you then decide you definitely wish to delete the folder, you could try the (free) Revo Uninstaller which is said to uninstall programs correctly:
http://www.revouninstaller.com/

It is also conceivable that the folder has been created by Malware, in which case you could download & update Malwarebytes anti-Malware:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
When updated, reboot into Safe Mode by depressing F8 and run a scan.

Folders with similar names are usually left behind by windows updates and for some reason on any or all drives. Very often the folder only contains one .txt file in it with the name ___xml___, but not always.

You can usually delete it by opening the properties of the folder, click on the security (NTFS permissions) tab, go to advanced, and take ownership of the file. Make sure you check the box to apply to child objects. You can then delete it.
If still having problems you could use an application like  http://www.killbox.com

techcodr--Do you find that same folder in C:\ of your hard drive?  I think it contains Windows System Operating Files and should not be deleted from the hard drive.
Of course if you want to wipe your external drive then reformat or use Unlocker or MoveOnBoot

Generally the Windows folders with strange numerical names in C:\ root are leftovers. Most of them (properly) do not survive a mandatory Windows reboot. In the odd case they do survive, I have changed permissions, checked the contents (nothing permanent) and delete them with no ill effect. Of course, I always check before deleting. ... Reply: Not likely in this particular case. The problem folder is in drive F whereas I would expect Windows update or service pack to be in drive C.

Reply: My experience with Revo it that one need to know the application or at least be able to open the application so the hunt mode can be pointed to the application. Here we do not know the application.

I do not believe this is malware. See other posts

When delete folder becc40f40dfbe2791aab9f4a589b61 is run, the message is folder AMD can not be deleted. I went to the two subfolders AMD and i386 and changed the owner for those and then was able to delete folder becc40f40dfbe2791aab9f4a589b61. This is the answer for how to delete.

This is the story I should have read all the replies first, then I would have saved a step The http://killbox.net/ site says KillBox is a tool to delete in-use files, if the file is running, KillBox will attempt to end the process (close the running file) and delete it. Problem here is that I dont have a file to stop but rather a folder that I can not access.

Reply: This computer is on the domain and I do not have full control. Logged off and then on as local administrator. Remove the check mark for read only but the results were not saved.
Later I ran a program called Who Locked Me and found that the Locker Name is explorer.exe, the user name is Administrator, the domain is local.

I used eraser from http://eraser.heidi.ie/. When eraser could not erase this folder, then I started looking at the folder. The plan is to remove this folder without regard to the contents.
When I tried to open http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ I got a big red window  with a Microsoft This website has been reported as unsafe.
I am not looking for a full drive eraser. I see folders named like this on other drives that I do not fully want to reformat.
http://www.emco.is/products/move-on-boot/features.php  This is a possible solution. Since the folder was deleted I could not test this possibility.

techcodr--"When I tried to open http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ I got a big red window  with a Microsoft This website has been reported as unsafe. "
That is suspicious.  You may have malware on the hard drive.  Have you run the usual scans?
"I am not looking for a full drive eraser"
Neither Unlocker nor MoveOnBoot are full drive erasers.  Heidi is.

by: techcodrPosted on 2009-11-09 at 07:56:42ID: 25777002

Eraser did allow me to select all unused space on the drive. I used that to permanently erase the data.

In regards to http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/, I will just open that as a separate case. No, I have not run the usual scans.
