asked on

windows 8.1

on my home network I set up a linksys 3500 router that has a usb storage connection.
I connected a 1tb usb drive to it and set up folders for sharing music and videos and documents. I had 2 computers running windows 7 and 1 running windows 8 and I had no problem accessing the shares from any computer.
I updated the windows 8 computer to 8.1 and since that time I have not been able to get the windows 8.1 computer to connect to any of the network folders.any time I try to map the folder as a network drive\\192.168.1.1\folder name it tells me that it cannot find the share. the windows 7 machines do not have any issues

Just an observation, I do not know why the topic is showing crystal reports software, that was from a previous question I had asked

did you turn network discovery back on?
agree with Crishanna_mvp. when upgrading to 8.1 several settings are defaulted, including several network settings.

check you've set these back as they should be. If that doesn't help start by checking you can ping the network drive to confirm it can see it.
I did make sure that network discovery was on for my private network, so I tried turning it on for general and public networks but I still cannot connect. on the windows 7 machines I can go to run and type in \\192.168.1.1 and the share comes up but on the windows 8.1 it says it cant find it. this only started when I updated from windows 8 to windows 8.1
So did you try to ping it?
it might also be helpful to see the output of ipconfig /all from both devices
the storage device is hooked up to a usb port on my wireless router, if you are asking if I can ping the address of my router yes I can.
this is the IP config from the 8.1 machine

Ok...I'm just a little confused by the results...but that's ok
May I suggest you start with some basics
Shut down/disable all adapters except for the Ethernet adapter and then see what happens
the windows 7 machine that has vmware and virtualbox installed works fine, the problem is with the windows 8.1 and I only have virtualbox installed.

Anyway I don't know if this was the best solution but I reset the router to factory defaults and then reprogrammed it to my to my specs and then set up the shares again and that fixed the issue.

not to complain but I am paying for this service and it seems like more often than not I have to figure things out myself

While this is a "paid service",  the persons who respond to your postings are not paid, per se.  There is a never a guarantee as to how many people will see, much less respond to any given question.

You seem to be operating quite outside the box on these machines like perhaps a lab setup and so sometimes it takes a bit of time to sort through things.
CrisHanna_MVP I understand completely what you are saying but my point is I know that there is no way for anyone person to know the answers to every IT issue that comes up so that is why I subscribed to this site, and when I first subscribed it did seem like the experts knew the answers but now it just seems like they are searching the internet like I am to find the answers.
I don't know if the experts changed or if they just got lazy but  this is a paid service. I don't know who gets my money but I know they take it and I would think I could get good service
