The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

URGENT! Remote Desktop;Terminal Services;2000 Server;too many connections, no access to local machine
Tags: remote, many, server, desktop, 2000
I have no access (for at least a week) until I canot access my mail server.
My windows 2000 server has remote desktop enabled.
I use remote desktop to access my server and have been for years now.
I have not been infront of the server for at least 2 years.
My problem is:
I cannot log into the server anymore, when I log in, I enter my username and Password, It authenticates
After it confirms that I have typed in a correct username and password, it tells me there are to many users logged on.
the problem is, I have no time out set. and because it is a windows 2000 Server i cannot log onto the console session.
Is there some way I could (with admin credentails) log onto the task manager of the server or restart the server or log off an idle user. Anythign that will let me get back into it.

All my email accounts are not set up and i just finished uninstalling the old mail program and installing the new mail accounts.

Noone will have email (personal and business accounts) until I can finish the setup.

There are only 2 remote desktop connections possible. If they are somehow considered active, even if idle you will get that message. It is possible to remotely lo  onto a 3rd session the console session. To do so sear the remote desktop connection from the run box using :
mstsc /console
This will open the RD client and you connect in the same way but to the console session. If this works you can restart the server or log off the existing sessions using terminal services manager.

I have gotten into the box, I called up the host and left a message for them to have someone go down to restart the server. I don't knwo if they did or not. Maybe it timed out after 24 hours???

I am still gogin to look into all the answers because i dont' want this to happen again.
Also, I want to see how I can do it. This information is very useful if i can find it. Any idea how I can set up a back door to restart the server in case i need to?

>>"back door to restart the server in case i need to?"
This is what the console session is most often used for.

Psexec as suggested by jburgaard will not work over a non LAN connection, but if you were to set up a VPN to the site you may be able to use psexec in conjunction with psshutdown, or the windows shutdown command, but I believe only if you are connecting from a domain machine as you cannot specify the domain in conjunction with the user name.

from what I understand windows 2000 does not support the console session.
I tried using mstsc /v:servername /concole and it did not do anything.
I do know however, that that would have worked if this would have been a server 2003 edition.

"then perhaps the simple sol. is to restart the server:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=317371"

The shutdown tool would not work as I am not on the same domain as my webserver.

This is a VERY good idea, I am going to implement that ASAP.
This will solve the problem for the future.

As for restarting the server on windows 2000 server without being on the domain and only having the admin credentials; I would liek to figure that out.

I will leave this open for a few days to see if someone posts an answer.

Sorry I wasn't aware it didn't work with 2000. Interesting I just stumbled on the following, might be why I had thought otherwise, but apparently I am wrong <G>:
"The Mstsc Help and Support topic incorrectly states that you can use the /console switch to connect to the console session (session 0) of a specified Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer."
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311926

There would be security concerns with being able to shut down a server without proper access to the domain. Likely the VPN is your best option, or you could set up access to the LAN in a different way such as 2nd remote desktop connection to a PC by changing the default listening port and router port forwarding:
http://www.petri.co.il/change_terminal_server_listening_port.htm
Or, use a 3rd party tool such as http://www.logmein.com or http://www.hamachi.cc
My preference would be the RRAS VPN. This would allow you to use shutdown commands or access another PC using the LAN IP with no port forwarding additions for RDP.
Accepted Solution

Have you tries connectind directly to the console session. type
mstsc /console
at the command prompt and then supply the normal computer /user details

it looks like there is no answer for windows 2000, but there I will take procautions to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Thanks RobWill
