Hi

A word of warning: If you aren't comfortable using the registry and have no knowledge\experience of regedit, then don't do it. The smallest changes could render your machine inoperable.

To check the service, go start > run and type in regedit and press OK.

Navigate to HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\CryptSvc.

On the right hand side there should be a value for start that is set to 2. This means that the service is set to start automatically with windows.

Once this is confirmed, check the event log for any errors relating to failure of the cryptographic service to either start or run.

That should be enough to determine if the service is running or not.

The site mentioned by SheharyaarSaahil at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798 is pretty comprehensive so far as it even goes to reinstall/upgrade if all of the methods fail. You could also try this http://searchwinit.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid1_gci994336,00.html.

If you have tried the above and it hasn't worked, then a backup of your data and a complete reinstall and restore of your data seems the most expedient solution.

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2007-09-12 at 04:39:21ID: 19875309

it does have.....it just doesn't list it in the services section :)

"Note Windows 2000 does not list Cryptographic Services in the SERVICES Administrative Utility."
