The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Vista business client  can not connect to domain

Vista Business edition (upgrade)
Only one server in this company

I  can not get this new Vista computer to connect to the domain.  I have connected a few XP pro computers to the same server/domain over the past couple of days, with no problem.  This server has been in use for a long time.

I created a new computer account on the server.
I can ping the server's IP Address from the new Vista client.
IPCONFIG shows a proper address and gateway and DNS servers are correct (the ISPs)
The W2K  server is NOT a DNS server.  The DNS, for this company, is pointing to the provider.

I do not have to work with server configurations very often, so I am extremely rusty.

Here is the error I get:
An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed.  Please verify this client isconfigured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain.

Any help would be appreciated.

The DNS setting is NOT correct - it must point at your Windows DNS server - NOT the ISP
Active direvtory MUST have a local authorative DNS server - Without this Active Directory cannot work.

All machines including the server itself MUST point to a local DNS server - external DNS lookups are then resolved by setting up forwarding as described in http://www.petri.co.il/configure_dns_forwarding.htm.

OK, so DNS has been installed.
Please forgive my ignorance on this subject.  I plan on reviewing DNS ASAP but I need to try to fix this issue as soon as possible!

I need to resolve the IP Address of my internal server with it's name
I looked at your link (many thanks).  If I input my ISPs DNS servers there, will it help?
Is there a simple procedure for me to get this PC to recognize my server.  It is as simple as shown in your link?

Example:
Domain Name = ABC
Servername = Server1
IPAddtess of Server 192.168.1.99

You MUST fix DNS - that is the heart of your problem the client needs to reference the DNS server that holds the SRV records for your domain in order to locate and establish a link with the domain controller - no DNS - no domain.

Putting your ISPs DNS server in will not help - your ISPs DNS servers do not know anything about your domain and do not hold the SRV or A records for it.

You MUST install DNS properly

You MUST make the server point to itself for DNS

You MUST set all clients (including the new one), to use the Windows DNS as the preferred AN ONLY DNS server - either in the TCP/IP settings or DHCP options

You MUST set up forwarders on the DNS server properties tab to resolve external names

KCTS,

Thanks for the quick reply.
I setup the forarders to point to our ISPs DNS servers.

I apologize for the  very dumb question but how do I make the server point to itself for DNS?

I will set the clients to point to our new DNS server as soon as I setup the DNS server in-house.

OK, so I created a new zone with the name of the domain (domainname.com).
If I look in DNS, in the forward lookup zone, I see my new zone (domainname.com).
In that zone it created :
- a Start Of Athority record (servername.domainname.com)
- A Name SErver record  (servername.domainname.com)
- A Host record with the correct IP Address of the server
So far so good?

On the DNS Server, in the TCP/IOP settings for the network card, I pointed DNS to itself.  Correct?
I setup forwarderss to our ISPs DNS servers.

Question:
The clients are getting the DHCP addresses from the router.
Can I just set the first DNS server, on the router, to point to our internal DNS server?
And additionally configure our ISPs DNS servers as secondary DNS servers?
