The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Setting domain to sync with internet time
Tags: time, server, 2003, internet, sync
I have two servers.

Windows 2000 DC1
Windows 2003 DC2

I would like to set the Server 2003 DC to sync with internet time. My question is how do I know which domain has the master time for the entire network? Also is there anything specific i need to when configuring this? Lastly, is there a command i can type in once I have made the changes that will allow me to verify if the DC is snycing with the internet?

Our server tend to drift off from true time and this has casued some issues with our VPN users.

Note I have opened port 123 for NTP-- which i believe is required for the time sync to occcur.

Have you referenced this article yet?

Configuring an authoritative time source in Windows Server 2003: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042

Domain clients take their time from the PDC Emulator - What I usually do it install atomic.exe on the PDC emulator then I never have domain time problems :) once the firewall has the ports open you have allready opened :)

Okay the Atomic.exe sounds the easiest way.

I did install it however I am getting an error message saying that the time servers may be down or Port 13 is not open. I thought Port 123 was all i needed?

Once you completed with setting up the time server, you may want to audit the progress you made. There is a little utility called "Domain Time II" on symetricom's website. It makes it easy to audit the domain computer's time.

Here is a blurb on it's function:
http://www.symmttm.com/pdf/Network_Timing/ds_domain_time_2.pdf

The download page, I believe:

Hello m8 :)

I still cant connect to the time servers with Atomic.exe. I opened port 13 in my firewall and NTP port 123. Does anyone know what i may be doing wrong?

did you open TCP and UDP Ports 123?

I have a hardware firewall. So far UDP port 13 and UDP port 123 are open.

Steve:

I think the three of us don't want to step on eachother's toes but combined have a solution to your problem:

Peter's suggestion is to use a little utlity to sync the domain controller to an outside time server.
Laura's suggestion will help you raise the flag as the authoritative time server.
My suggestion is to audit what has been done.

I helped a few folks with setting up an authoritative time server. This is the process I came up with. This has worked many times without dropping the firewall.
http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/Q_22799695.html

Then added to this was Domain Time II as an audit utility.
Here is a blurb on it's function:
http://www.symmttm.com/pdf/Network_Timing/ds_domain_time_2.pdf

The download page, I believe:
http://dtdocs.ntp-systems.com/software/domaintime/instructions/audit/index.asp

Hope I didn't step into other's territory here.

Hi CheifIT,

I downloaded the utility and it didnt let me know anything more that what I already knew--all of our machines have the same time as our domain. I need to get our Domain to maintian the correct time and the workstations will automatically follow. The time issue is really importatnt for our offisite employees.

Atomic.exe appears to be the easiest and its free. Unless I am missing something here the Domain Time 2 cost doesnt appeal to me at all.

If atomic doesn't work, symmtime I think will, symmtime is a free utility. I thought Domain time II was a free utility as well.

symmtime works great! My domain is never more than a second off of true time and it updates now every four hours.

I like it. It's a good little product.

Glad to see time is going so well for you.
