Can't connect to Windows Terminal server 2000 from Apple Mac

Hello All,

I have received a complaint that one of our remote users is not able to connect to our Windows TS 2000 anymore the following message pops up:

You were disconnected from the windows-based computer because there were problems during the licensing protocol.
Try reconnecting to the Windows-based computer or ask your administrator if the license is properly configured.

Some days later another Mac user reported the same.

Can you please shed some light on this as nothing has changed on either end. (at least that's what the users say and I am not aware of any changes on the server)

Cheers

Hi,

Yes definitely is.
Is the license server also on the terminal server??? If not have you checked that server to make sure everythings okay???

I understand that Win 2000 server does not need licenses as it uses the connecting client's license. All other Windows based users are OK. Perhaps it needs a license for each MAC client? But it worked until recently.

Well that is not true. Windows 2000 Server with Terminal Services does NOT require a client license IF and ONLY IF, the client OS is Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional (Vista I am not 100% sure now).
Anything else like Linux, Mac OS, etc do require a TS CAL.
This leads us to a couple questions:
- Do you have a licensing server up and running? On Windows 2000 environments this was usually setup on one of the 2000 DCs.
- Do you have licenses available?
- Is the licensing server activated?
- Did you check the TS event log at the exact time the error occurs on the Macs trying to connect (run EVENTVWR for that on the TS)?
I assume the Windows 2000 Server has Terminal Services in Application Server mode. If that is indeed the case the licensing requirements do apply.

Yes you are correct about licensing I just was not sure if it applies to MACs now it rings the bell something about MS allows 3 licences to be used for X number of days then expire that might be the case I need to check the licensing server.
Any device can connect and get a temporary license that will be good for 90 days (3 months). After that the TS will contact the licensing server to get a license and will enforce that, meaning if there is no license, no connection to the device.

Yes that's what I think is happening .
I have just check the licensing on that server and it says "135 licences per server purchased/per server reached 8". I am not sure though if this applies to TS, excuse my ignorance but is there a specific location I should be checking?

Ignore my previous license reading: The TS licensing manager says we have 5 purchased CAL token (per device) and zero available.
So I guess that confirms our theory?
Yep... any client other than xp and vista will need a licence...  on win2kTS .. win2K3TS all clients need licenses...

I just got the user to attempt a login so and entry would be created in the event viewer this is what I found: "event ID 1004 the terminal server cannot issue a client license"
