Full Backup of Windows 2000 server RAID 5 Volume for upgrading disk capacity.

Asked by mactus in Windows 2000 Server, Computer Hard Drives, Microsoft Server

We have a Windows 2000 Server on RAID 5 that is running out of disk capacity, we have purchased an additional Disk with intentions to add to the RAID 5 Volume.

Questions:
1. How do we fully backup the D: ? we can copy all the data files, but how do we capture the security permissions on the folders?
2. Can changing the logical partition into a dynamic disk make adding another physical HDD more convenient? i.e. able to add a HDD dynamically without having to backup D: and restore D:?
3. If the C: (OS) and D: (data) shares the same RAID 5 Volume, can we add another HDD to the RAID Volume without refomating the C:?

The current RAID 5 volume is made of 3 x 73GB SCSI HDD w/ RAID 5 controller.
- Dell utility partition, 50MB
- C:, Primary partition (Boot) w/ Windows 2000 Server OS, 20GB
- D:, Logical partition w/ Oracle and application server running, 124GB
- new HDD, 73GB
- Currently backup is done using file copy i.e. copy D: to another file server then to USB HDD, no backup Software like Veritas backup used.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Thanks
