The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

The Adsiedit.msc tool could provide that information to you.  It is include in the Windows Server 2003 Support Tools from the Product CD.  It could be downloaded at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Linkid=100114

Hi Tastas,

Thank you so much for your quick response. I have ADSI edit installed. How do I use it to find the Exchange DN name? I am a newbie. Please give me detailed instructions.

02.25.2008 at 06:45PM PST, ID: 20981234
Start --> run --> adsiedit.msc

or simply double click on the adsiedit.msc on the location where you installed it.  Once you have started the app, click on Action menu.  Right click on Connect to....

I dont have the app installed so I can't provide you with the step by step instructions.  That is how much I remember.

By the way, if you can't open adsiedit.msc, you would need to register the adsiedit.dll

regsvr32 adsiedit.dll

> How can I find Distinguish Name(DN) for a user in Active Directory

The one you're displaying is the attribute called the "legacyExchangeDN", it differs from the "distinguishedName" attribute.

Otherwise, ADSIEdit.msc is a good suggestion :)

Ah, you are right Chris. Thank you for pointing it out. So how can I get the "LegacyExchangeDN" name? I am in desperate and urgent need for getting  this information.

ADSIEdit.msc as recommended above.

Depends how many of them you need really, it's dead easy to script things to return that kind of information.

You should also be able to see it in exports created by tools like LDIFDE and CSVDE.

Well if I get a script for one user I can manage it to get it for other users (provided the script is modifiable. I don't know scripting. If you can either show me how to use ADSIEdit to get that info or point me to the script I can take it from there.

I tried ADSIEdit but could not find any option to get the legacyExchangeDN information

Should be in ADSIEdit under the properties for each user. It'll list all attributes for the account in question. See attached pictures, although the value isn't set for me because I have no Exchange Installation on that domain.

Anyway, if a script is easier, then this is very simple (in VbScript, so would need saving as .vbs).

Where the user is in AD like this:

YourDomain.local\SomeFolder\Sam Doe

2:
3:
4:
Set objUser = GetObject("LDAP://CN=Sam Doe,OU=Some Folder,DC=YourDomain,DC=local")

WScript.Echo objUser.Get("legacyExchangeDN")

ADSIEdit.msc - User
ADSIEdit.msc - User

ADSIEdit.msc - User Properties
ADSIEdit.msc - User Properties

Hi Chris-Dent,

Thank you sooooo much for your help. I really appreciate your time and effort that you put in on getting me detailed instructions. I am now able to get the  "LegacyExchangeDN" information throught ADSIEDIT. Only thing that I see different is the second screen. I don't get the "AttributeEditor" button. Instead I get only "Attribute" button and I get a dropdown for "Select a property to view". This is were I have option to pick the "LegacyExchangeDC". When I do that it gives me the path.

Once again THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!

Older version of ADSIEdit, the newer version is a bit nicer. But that's just a matter of having Windows 2003 instead of 2000.
