Windows 2000 server cannot transfer DNS zone file due to incorrect serial number

Asked by sudama in Windows 2000 Server, Domain Name Service (DNS)

We have a Windows 2000 box that is running a DNS server.  There is a secondary zone file on this server that receives updates from the primary Linux server running BIND 9.

We use the standard method of YYYYMMDDNN for our serial numbers, which makes it easy to tell when zone was last modified.

Unfortunately several weeks ago a zone transfer was done with a serial number that was way out of whack, 800 years in the future.  This was easily corrected on our Linux DNS servers, but not so much on the win2k box.

Despite all my efforts I have been unable to get the Windows server to accept a zone transfer.  It just stays stuck with the wrong serial number and old zone file.  I even tried editing the zone file by hand on the Windows server, and refreshing but no dice.

How can I force the Windows server to accept the zone transfer and get it back in sync with the primary Linux DNS server, with the correct serial?Start Free Trial
