Placing a new PowerEdge 2950 Dell server at remote (branch) location to replace existing server

I am installing a new server at one of my branch locations to replace an existing one. My question is if I can install this server as a (member) file server with the existing server (Domain Controller) for right now and if this is possible for the next steps shown below:

1. Keep new server running as a member server with existing Domain controller server but move the data over to the new server and have
the users access it from new location.
2. Once the new server have been stable running for about 2 weeks, I will demote the old server to a member server and then promote the
new server as a domain controller which I will then retire the old server after a week.

Please advise if I this is the best wqay of doing this server replacement
