Question

Lost Mailbox Store after removing permision - Exchange 2003

Asked by: GGasson

Hi,

I am new at this. I have read the other solutions but do seen to understand exactly what to do. As mentioned in other question our exchange server mail is not secure and I tried removing Authenticated users as I has already removed all other permissions and everything was still working fine but security had still not changed. So when I removed the Authenticated inheritance the mailbox store disappeared. I have found the mdb files which is 39Gbyte big but I don't seem to get the mailbox store back again. I have even tried to create a new Mailbox store to see if I could point to the previous mdb files but that does not work.

The other solution apparently is to go to every pc and to export the all mail to a pst file and then to create a new mailbox store and then link all users back to the new mailbox store and then to import every pst file back onto the every computer once the exchange has sync. This is a problem as every user does not sit at the office so is there another way of doing this?

Please I really require assistance.

Create a Recovery storage group and try to mount the old database in Recovery storage group
Of that works then youcan mount the Mailbox store with the blank database and then you can merge the email from RSG to production mailbox store

do this

install windows 2000 support tools on any other server in your domain
open adsiedit.msc
expand configuration
expand services
expand microsoft exchange
expand your exchange org
expand administrative groups
expand your administrative group
expand servers
expand your this exchange server
expand storage group

now on the right window, you would see the public folder store and the problem mailbox store
right click on the mailbox store and click on properties
you would get an error initialy but click on OK and it will let you in
once in the properties, change the permissions back to what they were before the problem occured

also, take a system state backup before doing any changes in there with adsiedit.msc
you can download the windows 2000 support tools from http://www.microsoft.com/DownLoads/details.aspx?familyid=F08D28F3-B835-4847-B810-BB6539362473&displaylang=en

Hi, Thanks for all the above answers but non has worked. The biggest problem is that I have the mba file and I don't have any mailbox store in the directory.

So I need to link the file to a mailbox store some how.

Gary

did you check via adsiedit.msc ?
As of now you are not able to see the mailbox store in the Exchange System Manager but still the object is in Active Directory but is hidden because of the permissions.

by: vishu_sh1977Posted on 2009-08-22 at 06:26:54ID: 25158618

Agreed with Rakeshmiglani,
We can check use Adsiedit.msc using windows 2000 Support tool or some time it work from Active directory sites and services with services nodes option we can follow the above path provided by Rakeshmiglani and checked the permission and then we can provide the default permission which might be missing
we can follow the KB article to give the default permission

Hi,

When I use adsiedit and I right click on the CN=Mailbox Store then I get the following message - An invalid directory pathname was passed.

I don't have a mailbox store anymore so I created a new one is this a problem?

Regards,

Gary

by: vishu_sh1977Posted on 2009-08-22 at 07:29:47ID: 25158799

Right click on the cn=mailbox store which is on the right pane
click on the properties and click on security
Look for the authenticated user and remove the deny permission from it
If you get the error message while right clicking on it click on Ok and see it work or not
and i believe you are using windows 2000 Support tool

Vishu

Must I create a new mailbox store?

Gary

by: vishu_sh1977Posted on 2009-08-22 at 08:05:57ID: 25158972

Ok
Let follow the below step
Open active directory sites and services and navigated to the services mode.
Expand the first storage group and right click on Mailbox store and click on Securtiy tab
and if look for security tab and checked the permission and uncheck the deny permission if you are unable to remove deny permission it might be inheritance from the top level or else
create a Recovery storage group and try to mount the old database if still u are unable to mount let us know the error message while mounting the database in RSG it it get mounted then we can merge the mail or we can take pst using exmerge

by: rakeshmiglaniPosted on 2009-08-22 at 10:35:51ID: 25159505

As I already mentioned, an error would come. You need to click on OK there so that the properties page comes up.
once you are in the properties, go to security/permissions and make the changes.

Hi Vishu,
Thank you for the step by step indication. I have done everything but I think I have done something else as I can see a New mailbox store which I have created think I can let it point to the old MDB file (which I think is the problem I have caused.) I do see a the exchange but the problem I have now is that I am sitting with the 39GB mbd file which I need to get into the exchange. Please attached what I see.

by: vishu_sh1977Posted on 2009-08-22 at 13:23:56ID: 25160096

open command prompt and run the command Eseutil /mh "path of the 39 gb databse file"
Example : c:\program files\exchsrvr\mdbdata\bin>eseutil /mh "d:\Database file\priv1.edb"
Checked the state of the database file
To mount the store it should be in clean shutdown with log file required 0*0
If they are in clean shutdown
Dismount the mailbox store
rename the new database file (priv1.edbold and priv1.stmold)
copy the 39 gb databse file to the default location
Note: Copy the 39 gb database donot cut and paste
Create a new folder under log file location name as old log file
Move all the log file and .chk file to the Old log file folder
right click on the mailbox store and click on properties and click on database tab
check the box this database can be overwritten by restore
Mount the store
I believe you will able to view the mailbox
right click on the mailbox store and select run clean up agent
because all the mailbox might be disconnected
If they show redx then we can connect the users back if not login in outlook and check are we able to view the mails

Regards
Vishu

the screen shots that you had shared were pointing to the server properties, where as we are looking for the mailbox store properties as the mailbox has issues and not the server.
can you share the screenshot of adsiedit.msc, so that we can view the public folder and maibox store on the right window?

by: vishu_sh1977Posted on 2009-08-22 at 23:29:26ID: 25161539

That's right it pointing to server but it was an example so we can use site and services in services mode and we can checked the permission

    Administrator not reconnecting

by: vishu_sh1977Posted on 2009-08-25 at 13:18:11ID: 25181789

Reconnect the adminstrator mailbox using Exchange System manager

by: GGassonPosted on 2009-08-27 at 02:58:25ID: 25196157

Hi Vishu,

After restoring everything and everything seems to be working fine I got the following:

1. My mailbox was dismounted Thursday morning and everyone was disconnected. I mounted the mailbox and everyone was reconnected. I did not dismount the mailbox, will it dismount automatically? I have read something about setting your DB size of the exchange but I looked at the support list but I am not sure which key to adjust in the regedit according to the support http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912375. (I have included a picture.) How do I which Private key belongs to my mailbox?

2. When trying to search for a key I found the following unknown Mailbox Store which I would assume is the previous mailbox. Can I delete it? (I have included a screen shot.)

Regards,

Gary
