The Network Connection uptime is definitely the quickest way to find out, but if you want to double check, (in case there was a Network Error that caused the Network to go down, but not the server) you can usually check out the Event Log under Administrative Tools.
You might also consider using something like Logmein IT Reach (now Pro2 under the new scheme). One of the first things that comes up when you connect is the current uptime, and you can even configure it to alert you if the Server goes down, along with a Myriad of other alerts. Normally it's around $6.00 to $10.00 per machine, but if you manage hundreds of machines like us, you can get it for far less per workstation / server.
