Question

Replacing a single server in a domain with a new server

Asked by: final4fever

We are replacing a server 2000 server with a server 2008 server. Because of issues with the old server we had to dcpromo the old server and leave no servers in domain then promote new server.1 server thats it no other servers in the domain.
We gave the new server the same domain as the old and that went fine! Got AD running, DNS and DHCP. Set up half a dozen users with profiles....
BUT now none of the profiles are updating (2 actually get to a desktop) ! and it comes up on 1 of them that the profile cant be found... 1 machine starts to log in and and just sits at loading user settings forever (waited an hour) And 2 others Can't find the domain and wont even try logging in. If I log in locally I can ping server by IP or FQDN and it resolves. What am I missing here! Do I need to remove machine from domain and put back in??? I am really afraid they wont rejoin and the one machine that sits at loading user settings I cant get to. Remember only 1 server hereThank you

Are the users aswell as the workstations shown in the AD ?
Otherwise I would suggest, remove the workstations from the domain and register again.
also look at the profile mappings of your users if they are correct.

I added 6 of the users to test and the computers didnt show up even after rebooting both the pc's and the server. So I added them manually!
My profile mappings are \\"servername"\Profiles\username. The Profiles folders is on C: drive and folder name is username!

if you run gpupdate on one of the machines, would they renew the policy ? if not they are not connected to the domain propper. They should put themself in the AD and this doesn't have to be done manually. What do you excacly do to get a workstation in the domain ?

Normally in a domain I let the computers add themselves... but since the domain existed before this server ever did... the computers were all in the domain prior to the server being brought up!!
Reminder: This server is replacing an old server in this single server domain!
Thank you

Ok, try on a workstation to remove join a workgroup (thus leaving the domain), on the AD remove that workstation name. Now there no traces of that name, On the workstation join the domain again. So you know for sure it works.

Please post ipconfig from server and client. When you create a new domain you need to unjoin the clients from the old domain then rejoin them to the new domain.
