what shows up in event viewer?
Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI've got a w2k3 server that is hosting a web site, used as a mail (pop3/smtp) server, and has ftp access.
Everything is working well after a reboot - I can enter the system using remote desktop, I can open a browser on the system and go on the web.
Then if I log in to the ftp via IE6 from another computer (which I do often to move files around when I'm at work).
After I close the ftp session, I can still log on to the server using remote desktop but I can no longer access the web from a browser on the server (I get a page not found error). And I cannot log in to another ftp session on the server. The mail still works fine and the web pages are still served as normal. If I reboot the system everything is back to normal until I log off of an ftp session again.
I am using IIS 6 and the built in ftp server. I have the w2k3 firewall turned on and besides that I am connected directly to my ISPs cable modem.
Any help greatly appreciated,
Jon

Thanks for the excellent response:
- I tried it with Leechftp and there was no problems. In fact after using Leech, I cannot reproduce the error at all using IE6. Previously the errors were consistant for a week (since I had configured the server).
- I like using IE for ftp since I'm using many different computers in a day and don't always have an ftp program available but I guess I'll have to put it on my site so I can download and install it if necessary. I know how to do CMD line ftp so if i'm ever really stuck I'll use it.
- I haven't heard of Web Folders - I'll check out your link.
- I haven't looked at Zone Alarm free version for a while but the last time I did you couldn't open specific inbound ports (making it basically useless if you are running a server). And since I only maintain this server remotely (it's just a box w/o keyboard or mouse or monitor sitting in my basement) I'd hate to have my server down all day while ZoneAlarm requests permission for some program to access the web.
- The ftp service was set up step-by-step from the w2k3 server documentation. I log in using my NT account. The setup was pretty straightforward - I can't see how I could have messed it up.
- I'll have to see if the problem reoccurs in the next couple of days...if not thanks for the info/help.

- nothing relating to this that I can see in the event log.

good to hear that your problem has gone away, at least for now.
i haven't tried zonealarm for an actual production server myself but I believe (as of current version) it can allow inbound ports by specifying which programs to allow as server over the internet (as well as access the web), then ZoneAlarm wouldn't bother you with those messages. and when services first try to do such, they will appear in this access list you manage, or you can manually add it to the list. I believe the specific port management is hidden by ZoneAlarm as it manages by applications/services instead. And you can also select/enable the allow uncommon protocols at high security option under Firewall->Main->Advanced if your services require uncommon protocols such as running a VPN.
actually the problem returned...and I eventually figured it out on my own:
I had the mail server running under an NT account so that I had to close the term server and leave the session active but I when got the mail server to run as a service so that i could log out properly then the problem disappeared.
The ftp thing turned out to be a red herring completely.
fine with me it you still want to award the points to daluu.

I wonder if it is an IE/IE6 problem, FTP service problem, or some other win 2k3 problem. BUT I think it most likely is IE/IE6 issue (logoff incomplete or something). I personally don't use IE for FTPing, it's buggy and slow in my opinion. Here's some debugging suggestions:
es/howto/w ebhowto.do c (NOTE: for you, you need only enter the website as the location to open unless you wish to use a subweb, which requires FrontPage to create). Then once connected, you can do your drag and drop, but that's all you can do.
1) try FTPing via DOS or a free FTP client you can easily find on the web. I can give you DOS FTP instructions if you need assistance. If this works ok after FTP disconnect, then it's an IE issue. these methods of FTPing are much faster too.
2) you could try using IE 5 or 4 (unless you need or have only IE 6)
3) I also recommend using Windows Web Folders (which use FrontPage extensions). I've used them so far under Windows 2003 and it works great. The default and root web folder that is accessable over the web is the wwwroot folder (you can make a subweb under there using FrontPage if you wish). To connect follow the user guide here http://hp.sjsu.edu/resourc
4) try disabling the firewall for a bit and try the "test" again and see if the problem occurs again. if so, it's the firewall. Why not use ZoneAlarm's free firewall, it's much better than the Windows XP/2k3 default firewall I believe, and it offers more configurability.
5) btw, how was the FTP service and accounts setup? I wonder if it is an FTP configuration problem.
