well ive ran UPUX and Windows 2k server,

Your support costs for running HPUX will be much higher and trained support staff will be thinner on the ground, we used to pay a fortune for HPUX consultancy cause we had no one on staff that could do anything advanced, most of us were ok with odd admin and some scripting, but weigh up the costs of running a DCLass HPUX server against a proliant running Windows and yes you will find the MTBF of the unix box is MUCH better but your actual support costs will be lower for the 2K3 box, thats just my personal experience of running the two

UNIX or Windows witch OS to use?

It depands on :
1) The Function of the server, what you expect the server to do?
2) Server performance, reliability, Stablbility, ans scalability
3) You buget, how much are you going to spend?
4) Are the applications going to run on the version of OS which you are going to use?
5) You network ENV
6) Sys adm staff experience, and their personal perference
7) End User experience

eg, Pete prefer Windows, but I prefer UNIX.

The initial setup for UNIX box is more expensive than a Window box. HP Box would cost
you $$$$$, but if you have experienced adm to look after the sytem, the on going cost
is lower, easy to get freeware (UNIX open source software). and UNIX are more stable
then Windows. I can have a UNIX server running for years without a reboot.

BTW, all the super computers are run on *nix!
