SBS 2003 - Rename Domain Name Server

Hi, We are installing Small Business Server 2003 and we created a test Domain Name.
We now need to rename the Domain Name and make it a subset of the existing domain.

How can I do this.

Thanks ... Cathy.

Microsoft have produced some tools for renaming Windows 2003 domains.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/downloads/domainrename.mspx

http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2003_domain_rename.htm

However read the documentation supplied as there are some limitations.

Personally, if it is a new domain I would start again with a fresh install using the new prefered domain.

Do you want the new server to be a domain controller in a existing domain.  Or a domain controller of a new domain within an existing forest.

To add to existing domain, join the server like you join workstations to a domain.  Then run dcpromo to add the server to an existing domain.

To add the new domain to a forest you could try demoting the test domain server and then create a new domain but choose to add it to an existing forest.

Hope it works!

Since it's a new domain i would also recomment to create a new domain and start all over again.
(as sembee already suggested)

Hi, Thanks for your comments. This is more complicated than we thought. Currently we have an NT server that works very well and we bought a SBS 2003 server to put some contingency into the network.

Initally, we were going to continue to use the NT server as the main domian (with E-mail and Internet access )and the SBS 2003 as a slave or server (with the data and applications).

However, from your comments, I can see that this is not possible and that we have to use the SBS 2003 server as the main domain.

As a result, we have put the following plan together:
1. Re-install SBS 2003
2. Setup similar settings as the 'old' NT server i.e. Domain Name and Server Name
3. Set up the Users
4. Set up E-mail
5. Set up Internet
6. Setup the Applicationson the new server
7. Setup the data on the new server
8. Switch over the servers
(Have the old server on satnd by in case of an emergency)

I would be grateful if you have any comments regarding our plan.

Many thanks ... Cathy.
