Question

Windows SBS 2003 email problem

Asked by: pm-robinson

Hi
After installing SBS 2003 I named the domain .local as recommended, All internal mail functions OK mail is sent externally without any problems. The problem is when external people receive mail it is from xxxxx.local so they are unable to reply. I have added a new email address to all users and set it as the primary account i.e. @btconnect.com. Since changing the settings I am unable to receive any mail via the pop3 service. The mail is definitely leaving the pop3 servers but for some reason it is not being directed to the individual users. I can’t find the mail anywhere on the server but it must be somewhere.

Can anyone assist?

Many thanks

Hi Paul,

I'd check out this article as this had some tips about POP3 config on exchange and some of the problems this can cause using an external domain name with a internal private address.

Sorry to not be of more help but used MX records and SMTP connectors with a smart-host instead.

have you set up a recipient policy to add the domain in there that says it is responsible for all delivery of mail for this domain?

under esm > look at the recipient policies> default policy > and then create new> then smtp > then add your domain name in @domain.com format, tick the box....

the other mails may be in the postmaster account mailbox

you may want to wait a bit ...and apply the update now...right click on your new recipient policy..... also if this does not work you may want to rebuild your recipient update service.... just the domain one will do.

After making the changes to the recipient policy i am no longer able to send mail out. Undeliverable errors occur. As soon as i remove the .com from the recipient policy mail goes out but back to square 1 for the incoming.

Any ideas

Paul

I posted in your other thread... here is a copy of what I wrote, some of which duplicates above...
Simon.

Did you add the address @btconnect.com to Recipient Polices in ESM? If not then Exchange doesn't know that is a valid email address that it is responsible for.

ESM, Recipients, Recipient Policy. Right click on Default policy, then the "email addresses (policy)" tab. Add the domain in the format @btconnect.com

However as that is an ISP address make sure when you add it to recipient policy that you don't select the option at the bottom about Exchange being responsible for all email send to this address - otherwise messages to other btconnect subscribers will not leave your machine.

select @btconnect.com and make it the default.
Apply/OK out then right click on default policy and choose "Apply policy now..."

However I would strongly recommend that you get your own domain name. They cost less than £10 and will make life so much easier. It is what Exchange was designed for.

Simon.

Hi

When you say get your own domain name do you mean change the domain from .local to a new domain name (a purchased one). If this is correct will it reolve the mail issue and am i able to rename my domain under SBS 2003.

Many thanks

Your may also need to change a parameter in Exchange Server Manager.    Select Servers "fileservername"  Select Protocols;  SMTP; highlight Default SMTP Virtual Server; select proporties  from dialog box  select Delivery Tab,  then advanced ;

IN this dialog box  change the   Fully Qualified Domain Name   from the "fileservername.domain.local"    to "mail.domain.com

stop & start the virtual server.     The header on the messages should now be correct.
