Question

Winlogon.exe - Aplication Error Server 2003

Asked by: skavitch

I have seen this question elsewhere under the XP heading, but I am having the same trouble with 2003. (I have tried all the suggestions to that question.

I cannot get into Windows, in any mode safe, last known good, etc.

I have also swapped memory out and around in slots.

The boot drive is (stupidly, on my part) in a SATA raid array, so I also cannot boot to a floppy and have a poke around like that!

As soon as I press CTRL, ALT, DEL, the message:
Winlogon.exe - Application Error
The Instruction at 0x0000000 referenced memory at [same number]. The memory could not be read.

I suspect it is spyware but as I am unable to log on ANY way I can't do much to remove it!

BTW, I have Norton AV Corp running.

Gentlemen, HELP!

reinstall windows over itself.  The boot files have become corrupt (winlogon in particular).

1) insert the install CD
2) reinstall windows over itself.

At worst, you'll have to reinstall some applications, but you will retain data.

I don't have the disc to hand. (can't find when you want it)

However, I now have access to the old "C:" via a new XP install elsewhere on the system.

There is only 1 winlogon.exe, in the system32 folder.

This isn't an answer exactly, but it should get you into the server to have a look around.

If you have another PC to do so, download BartPE at: http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ and create a boot CD. You can usually easily integrate your SATA drivers by dropping them into the \drivers folder (instructions come with BartPE) - you can also integrate network etc.

This will at least let you boot from CD on the server and verify files etc. There are plugins for BartPE for Ad-aware, SpyBot, Kaspersky A/V, etc. on the BartPE page (or search for them). You can bypass all NTFS permissions and scan the server and remove the offending files.

Much more useful would be Winternals ERD Commander at www.winternals.com - you can integrate ERD Commander with BartPE, so you have SATA drivers. ERD Commander will attach to your registry and you can view the eventlog or edit the registry,  however ERDC is a substantial investment for a once off! :)

Hope this helps!
