The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Setting up a cluster on windows 2003 enterprise edition

Tags: cluster, 2003, windows, setting, up

My question is in relation to a new windows 2003 enterprise edition Cluster setup I am trying to complete.

While this new design of pre installing cluster administrator is great, I am left with a silly problem. I ran though the wizard several times and installed my new cluster. When finished cluster admin gives access denied when trying to attach to the newly formed cluster. I can however use the nodes name or a full stop to connect to the local configuration of the cluster. I can browse the cluster name from a run command (netbios is working), I can resolve it through DNS but still no go.

What I have completed to date to try and resolve this are the following

Evict the node, delete the MSCS directory and begin again with a new cluster name and IP - same result.
Tried it on the second node - same result.
Used host entries.
Created a new service account for the cluster service, logged onto the node as that account during setup - same result.
Confirmed that the quorum is accessible by creating folders in there, strangely enough I also had this problem when I original setup a test cluster with a local quorum.
A lot of the web is saying its a service account issue, however I did use the Enterprise Admin account as a last resort and am still getting this issue.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated ?

Are you using an empty password?

Oh, and if you change the service account manually, make sure you set the necessary rights:

Hi

Thanks for your reply. I had looked at both of those articles and confirmed that the service and local admin accounts have passwords and correct permissions.

I also took the teachings of the following article into account when setting them up
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;828861

The below article states that using the full stop to connect is not a problem, maybe I can live with it, its just the fact that I did go to the trouble of setting up a new cluster to test the build and got the same result.   It says its okay just a cluster admin "feature" but the fact that I have addressed the password issues to no affect is worrying.

I can browse the cluster name from the network, the cluster itself is functioning from what I can tell. What do you think ?

Many thanks again, your input is much appreciated

You could try to enable auditing on the cluster servers and check what it is exactly that's failing.
Are there maybe any group or security policies applying to the cluster servers that might interfere?
What you could try as well is to use a W2k3 machine with plenty of RAM (1GB upwards), install Virtual Server (an evaluation version is available), and create a test environment with a DC and two cluster nodes (a two node cluster is fully supported in Virtual Server). That should work without further problems, and you'll have a basis of comparison.

I have had the same problem and have now RESOLVED it!

The problem is caused by the Remote Registry Service, both of my nodes were running under local system accounts and so unable to verify cluster config on both nodes.  After changing the service to run under a domain account, I used the one created to run the cluster, all is fine.

What a nightmare that was!

Regards.

Karlos.
