Move higher up the folder tree.  If it's greyed out, that means it's inherited.

by: Netman66Posted on 2005-02-15 at 08:50:54ID: 13315644

If you just want to remove read only from this folder down, then you first need to remove inheritance and copy the permissions - then remove the read only attribute.

All folders are like this.  Even the folders in the root.

by: Netman66Posted on 2005-02-15 at 09:07:20ID: 13315825

Then there is something wrong with the permissions at the root.  What group are you part of locally?

What you're seeing doesn't mean the folder is read only. Yes, it can be confusing, I know.

What you are seeing is when go to the properties of a folder- on the general tab you see something under attributes called "read only"?

"The Read-only and System attributes is only used by Windows Explorer to determine whether the folder is a special folder"

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326549

A folder is only read only if the ntfs permissions for the folder are set to read only for a particular user. Go to the security tab and that is where you will see a list of users and what rights they have.

Hi Netman :))
I've seen it before in XP although it takes a slightly different form - green square. All it seems to do is confuse people though (like me until I figured it out and then learned to just ignore it). The only thing is in XP - it doesn't seem to matter if you have zero files or folders in a folder - or just one user with full control in the permissions - it STILL marks the read-only attribute. I suspect the same is true in 2003 server - Yep just tested it - it is the same. Must be a bug!
