How can I conveniently add large numbers of users to Active Directory?

Hello, I would appreciate help from someone who has experience with this:

We are a school and have now decided to provide each pupil with a personal login, and there are over 500 pupils at our school. My questions are:

1. What's the most convenient way of adding over 500 users to Active Directory (Server 2003)?

2. Would you use user names relating to their real names (e.g. initial + surname) or non-related logins (e.g. p005493)?

3. I would appreciate any further advice on managing such a large numbers of users, any issues that might come up. Maybe there's a best practice?
