The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. Unable to join domain

Asked by senko in Windows 2003 Server

I've promoted one of our servers as a domain controller for our Active Directory.  DNS is installed and configured.  When I try to add one of our member servers to the domain, it gives me a srv error:

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain erulemaking.net:

The error was: "This operation returned because the timeout period expired."
(error code 0x000005B4 ERROR_TIMEOUT)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.erulemaking.net

The DNS servers used by this computer for name resolution are not responding. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:

192.168.1.102

Verify that this computer is connected to the network, that these are the correct DNS server IP addresses, and that at least one of the DNS servers is running.

I checked the _msdcs settings under my domain, and there is nothing in there but one file that's named "(same as parent folder).  Isn't there suppose to be more to it than that?  
Also, on my member server I made sure that it is pointing to the correct dns server.  I'm able to ping the dns server, but unable to nslookup.  It says something like dns request time out.  
Any suggestions on how I can get this server (along with my other servers) to join the domain?
