The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

DNS forwarding or IIS redirect?  Which is better when...

Asked by LMITAdmin in Windows 2003 Server

Tags: redirect, iis, dns

Ok, I'm an intermediate...no expert...with DNS and IIS (learning like a knowledge sponge), but I know the answer should be fairly simple because I have it working now but just don't know if the situation could be improved (speed wise and security wise).

I just upgraded our small office to Server 2003 (all 8 servers).  We have one firewall server (ISA), two AD servers with DNS and one web server with IIS 6.

The ultimate goal is to get that "cool feature" working that if someone enters "domain.com" in the browser that they will automatically be sent to "www.domain.com".  I currently have this working using IIS 6 redirects but it took a total of six websites to do it.  We have the following:

www.domain.com (actual working page)
domain.com - redirect to www.domain.com
www.domain.net -  redirect to www.domain.com
domain.net -  redirect to www.domain.com
www.domain.org -  redirect to www.domain.com
domain.org -  redirect to www.domain.com

At the domain registrar I have the .net and the .org pointing to domain.com (although I'm thinking to kill at least one step I could send those to www.domain.com).  Can I someone do this same thing SECURELY on our local DNS server?  Would that be advantageous?  I'm just worried about the web server overhead having all of those redirects going on.  I did try it on our DNS server, but kept getting an error that said I couldn't assign the A record "www" to the root "domain.com".  The webserver is currently hosting a few websites using the host header names and we'd like to keep it that way if at all possible.

I will be assigning a low point value to this because I have it working one way and almost got it working the other way.  However, if you've got a killer way of improving both performance and overhead using one way or the other I'll jack the points up.  Thanks in advance!
