Obtaining the Microsoft HKCRScan utility

Hi All,
I am receiving a DCOM error message that says access is denied.  According to the Microsoft Website, the problem is due to a registry key being over 259 characters.  Here is the link:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823159

In the article, it discusses that Microsoft has a tool to fix this called HKCRScan.  But you have to call them to get the tool.  I was wondering if anyone already had the tool or if there is a place that I can download it.  I really do not want to pay for a support call if I can avoid it... Especially if I am not sure that it will solve the problem.

My understanding from others that have attempted is that they make you pay because it is not a hot fix, it is a utility.

If it's a fix (as stated in your first post) then it should be similar to a hotfix.  If this util is only to fix this problem, then it should be free.

Let me send PSS an email.

According to 2 internal guys in MS, this tool should be free.  Give PSS a call, if they give you a hard time open a case and email me the number.  I'll see if I can do something.

When you run HKCRScan make sure it runs all the way through HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

If this tool cannot scan the entire HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT component of the registry; this also means that Exchange & IIS won't be able to proccess it either.

If this is the case you need to use the Sysinternals tool "RegDelNull" to emunerate & remove the problematic entries. It deletes Registry keys that contain embedded-null characters and that are otherwise undeleteable using standard Registry-editing tools.

Run this tool with the following switches & remove the keys causing the issues. Make sure you backup your registry first!!!

"RegDelNull -HKU -s" followed by "RegDelNull HKLM -s"

Restart the "System Attendant" service.
