you could use secure ftp...ssh. This would be easy because you can repacage the free clients with the connection info included before distributing it to the clients....

What is my best option to provide secured real-time access to a FTP server on my Win2K3 server off my DMZ?
Options I'm considering
1.VPN first to firewall then access the FTP server but I don't want clients to have to do any configuring
2.HTTPS to IIS server for FTP access (but the files uploaded wouldn't be encrypted-right?)
3.RDP to the server and use RDP authentication - are the files encrypted?
Thanks.

The best solution? Hmmm hard to say. The best solution will provide a balance of leveraging existing infrastructure and return on investment associated with any costs when considering a solution. Try http://security.sdsc.edu/s
-You could also enable say pptp with require encryption and an ftp shareware client to the private IP of the server.

1 = Lots of configurating. Advantage, all access to the network, all encrypted.
2= not secure, almost sure microsoft barely supports it if it all
3= Yes the files are encrypted, still not the way to go.
The best way to go is to use a secure encrypted third-party FTP service and a compatible client.
For example, though not necessarily what I recommend. http://www.gene6.com/
